Rwanda has some of the best-maintained roads in the region, but conditions vary between the main highways and rural routes. Here's what to expect.

    Main highways: generally excellent

The paved routes linking Kigali to Musanze, Rubavu, Huye (Butare), Muhanga and the eastern towns are smooth, well-signed and regularly maintained. Expect winding, hilly sections rather than long straights — journeys take longer than the distance suggests.

    Rural and park roads: variable

    • Access roads to national parks and villages are often unpaved.
    • In the rainy season (roughly March–May and October–November) dirt roads can get muddy — a 4x4 is valuable.
    • Watch for pedestrians, cyclists and livestock on rural stretches.

    Planning your drive times

    • Average highway speeds are modest due to hills and towns — plan generously.
    • Avoid driving after dark on rural roads where possible.
    • Fuel up before long legs between towns.

Our driving guide has detailed tips for each region.
