Driving in Rwanda: A Guide for Tourists

Tourists can self-drive in Rwanda with a valid licence held for at least a year, a passport and a deposit. Rwanda drives on the right; roads in and around Kigali are good tarmac, while a 4x4 is best for the national parks and rainy-season mountain roads.

    Can tourists self-drive in Rwanda?

Yes. Self-drive is popular and straightforward for visitors. You'll need a valid international driving licence held for at least one year, your passport, and a credit card for the security deposit; some EAC national licences are also accepted. The age requirement is 18–70. See the full checklist on our fleet page or ask us before you travel.

    Road rules & the basics

Rwanda drives on the right-hand side of the road and overtakes on the left. Seatbelts are required, and using a handheld phone while driving is not allowed. Observe posted speed limits, which are lower in towns and near schools, and carry your licence and rental documents. Traffic in Kigali is orderly, with roundabouts and traffic police common.

Note: traffic regulations can change — confirm current speed limits and requirements before your trip.

Is it safe to drive in Rwanda?

Rwanda's main roads, especially around Kigali, are generally well surfaced and signposted, and the country is known for orderly traffic. Every rental includes GPS navigation and 24/7 roadside assistance, so help is available if you need it. Take extra care on rural mountain roads, in heavy rain and after dark, and watch for pedestrians, cyclists and motorbike taxis.

    Do I need a 4x4?

A standard SUV is fine for Kigali and the main tarmac roads. For gorilla trekking, the national parks and mountain roads — particularly in the rainy season — a 4x4 such as a RAV4, Prado or Land Cruiser is recommended. Compare options on our 4x4 vs standard SUV guide, and see safari & gorilla trekking transport.

    Fuel, mileage & practicalities

We use a full-to-full fuel policy — collect the car with a full tank and return it full. Fuel stations are widely available across the country. Rentals include unlimited mileage within Rwanda, so you can explore freely. Affordable self-drive hire starts at about $45/day, with comprehensive insurance included; see live pricing on the fleet page.

Crossing into Uganda, Tanzania or Kenya
