Can tourists self-drive in Rwanda?
Yes. Self-drive is popular and straightforward for visitors. You'll need a valid international driving licence held for at least one year, your passport, and a credit card for the security deposit; some EAC national licences are also accepted. Road rules & the basics
Rwanda drives on the right-hand side of the road and overtakes on the left. Seatbelts are required, and using a handheld phone while driving is not allowed. Observe posted speed limits, which are lower in towns and near schools, and carry your licence and rental documents. Traffic in Kigali is orderly, with roundabouts and traffic police common.

Is it safe to drive in Rwanda?
Rwanda's main roads, especially around Kigali, are generally well surfaced and signposted, and the country is known for orderly traffic. Every rental includes GPS navigation and 24/7 roadside assistance, so help is available if you need it. Take extra care on rural mountain roads, in heavy rain and after dark, and watch for pedestrians, cyclists and motorbike taxis.
Do I need a 4x4?
A standard SUV is fine for Kigali and the main tarmac roads. For gorilla trekking, the national parks and mountain roads — particularly in the rainy season — a 4x4 such as a RAV4, Prado or Land Cruiser is recommended. We use a full-to-full fuel policy — collect the car with a full tank and return it full. Fuel stations are widely available across the country.
