    Safari & Gorilla Trekking: FAQs

Which vehicle is best for gorilla trekking in Rwanda?

A 4x4 with good ground clearance is best for gorilla trekking, because the roads to Volcanoes National Park and the trek trailheads are steep and can be muddy. A Toyota Land Cruiser Prado or Land Cruiser is ideal; a RAV4 also handles the route well in the dry season.

    Do I need a 4x4 for a Rwanda safari?

Yes — a 4x4 is recommended for the national parks. Standard SUVs are fine for Kigali and main tarmac roads, but the park tracks in Akagera and the mountain roads to Volcanoes and Nyungwe are best driven in a 4WD vehicle, especially in the rainy season.

Can I self-drive to the national parks, or should I take a driver?

Both work. Experienced drivers can self-drive to all three parks with our 4x4s and GPS. Many visitors prefer to add a chauffeur for safari days so they can relax and benefit from local knowledge of the routes and wildlife areas.

    Do you arrange gorilla permits?

Gorilla and chimpanzee permits are issued separately by the Rwanda Development Board and must be booked in advance. We focus on the transport — a reliable 4x4 with optional driver to get you to and from the parks. Ask us and we can advise on timing.
