What Insurance Do I Need When Renting a Car in Rwanda?
Understand rental car insurance in Rwanda: what's included, what full coverage means, and which optional protection is worth buying.
Insurance is one of the most important — and most misunderstood — parts of renting a car. Here is what you need to know for Rwanda.
What's included as standard
Every rental from a legitimate company includes basic third-party insurance, which is a legal requirement to drive in Rwanda. This covers damage or injury you might cause to other people or their property.
What 'full coverage' actually means
Full coverage usually bundles third-party insurance with a Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and sometimes theft protection. CDW limits how much you would have to pay if the rental car itself is damaged. It doesn't always mean zero liability — there is often an excess (deductible) you are responsible for up to a set amount.
Should you buy extra protection?
- Yes, if you want peace of mind and a lower excess — highly recommended for rough roads and national parks.
- Check whether your credit card or travel insurance already covers rental cars before doubling up.
Ask before you sign
Always confirm the excess amount, what's excluded (e.g. tyres, windscreen, off-road damage), and what to do in an accident. We'll walk you through your coverage options when you book.
