Are Rwanda's Roads Safe for Tourists to Drive?
Rwanda is one of Africa's safest and cleanest countries to drive in. Here's what to expect on the roads, plus key local driving rules.
Rwanda has a well-deserved reputation as one of the safest, cleanest and most orderly countries to drive in across Africa. Tourists routinely self-drive here without trouble.
What the roads are like
Main highways connecting Kigali to major towns are paved and generally in good condition. Rural and park-access roads can be unpaved, winding and steep — this is where an SUV or 4x4 helps.
Key driving rules in Rwanda
- Rwanda drives on the right-hand side of the road.
- Seatbelts are mandatory; using a phone while driving is prohibited.
- Speed limits are enforced with cameras — around 60 km/h in towns and 40 km/h near markets and schools.
- Motorbikes (motos) are everywhere in cities — watch for them constantly.
- Drink-driving laws are strict and actively enforced.
Local etiquette
Rwandan drivers are generally courteous. Use your horn sparingly, give way at busy junctions, and be patient with pedestrians and cyclists on rural roads. Note that on the last Saturday of each month, Umuganda community work can limit traffic in the morning. Read the full driving in Rwanda guide for details.
