When a sedan is fine
If you are staying mainly in and around Kigali or travelling on the well-maintained main highways between major towns, a comfortable sedan is perfectly adequate and cheaper to run.
When you need an SUV or 4x4
- National parks: Volcanoes, Akagera and Nyungwe have unpaved access roads where ground clearance matters.
- Rural and mountain roads: some routes turn to dirt and can be muddy in the rainy season.
- Gorilla trekking: the roads to the trailheads are steep and rough — a 4x4 is strongly recommended.
