Camping and Overland Self Drive in Rwanda: Rooftop Tents

Rwanda is a small country with big scenery, which makes it unusually good for an overland camping trip. You can cross from savannah to volcanoes to rainforest to lakeshore in under a week, and you never face the enormous empty distances that make overlanding elsewhere in the region a logistical exercise. Here is how to do it.

The vehicle setup

A rooftop tent 4x4 is the standard Rwandan overland rig. Typically a Land Cruiser or Prado with a roof rack carrying a hard shell or fold out tent that opens in about two minutes and sleeps two adults. Larger setups add a ground annexe.

A properly equipped camping rental usually includes:

• Rooftop tent with mattress, and a ladder.
• Camping chairs and a table.
• Cooking gear: gas stove, cylinder, pots, plates, cutlery.
• A cooler box, or a dual battery powered fridge in higher spec vehicles.
• Water container and jerry can.
• Recovery basics: tow rope, shovel, tyre gauge and compressor.

Why sleep on the roof rather than the ground

Off the ground you are away from insects, rain runoff and mud, you set up and pack down in minutes, and you can stop wherever you end up at dusk rather than needing a prepared pitch. In Rwanda's rainy seasons this matters enormously.

Where you can camp

This is the part travelers most often get wrong. Rwanda is densely populated and highly organised. There is very little genuine wild camping, and pitching in a random field is not appropriate and may not be permitted.

• Akagera National Park has designated campsites, and they are the highlight of any Rwandan camping trip. Booking through the park is required.
• Volcanoes National Park area has campsites and lodges around Kinigi and Musanze that accept overland vehicles.
• Lake Kivu at Rubavu, Karongi and Rusizi has lakeside sites and guesthouses with camping ground.
• Nyungwe has park managed camping near the main reception areas.
• Lodges and guesthouses across the country will often let you camp on their grounds for a small fee and use of the facilities. Ask politely, it is usually a yes.

Always get permission, and never camp on private or community land without asking.

A suggested one week overland route

1. Day 1: Collect the vehicle in Kigali, drive east to Akagera. Camp inside the park.
2. Day 2: Full day game drive in Akagera, second night camping in the park.
3. Day 3: Drive north and west to Musanze. Camp near Kinigi.
4. Day 4: Gorilla or golden monkey trek, afternoon at the twin lakes. Second night at Musanze.
5. Day 5: Drive to Rubavu on Lake Kivu. Camp on the lakeshore.
6. Day 6: The Lake Kivu road south to Karongi. This is one of Africa's great drives and much of it is unpaved, so allow real time.
7. Day 7: Continue to Nyungwe or turn back through Huye to Kigali.

Kit and practicalities that actually matter

• It gets cold. Musanze sits at altitude and nights are genuinely chilly. Bring a proper sleeping bag, not a summer one.
• It rains hard. Even in dry season, expect afternoon storms. Waterproofs and a tarp earn their space.
• No single use plastic bags. They are banned in Rwanda and confiscated at the border. Pack fabric bags.
• Buy food in towns. Kigali, Musanze, Rubavu and Huye have good supermarkets. Villages have basics only.
• Fuel up whenever you are under half. Stations are sparse on the lake road and around Nyungwe.
• Download offline maps. Signal disappears in the parks and along parts of the lake.
• Carry cash. Campsites, park fees at some points and rural purchases are cash based.
