Self Drive Kigali
Kigali is the calmest capital city to drive in East Africa. It is compact, the roads are in genuinely good condition, traffic rarely gridlocks outside the two rush hours, and secure parking is normal rather than a luxury. A self drive car turns the city into an easy base.

What driving in Kigali is actually like
The city is built over a set of ridges, so almost every route involves a climb and a descent. Junctions are mostly roundabouts, lane discipline is reasonable, and traffic police are present and polite. Two things catch visitors out: the motorcycle taxis that filter around you constantly, and the pedestrians walking on the shoulder of the road at dusk.
Rush hour runs roughly from 7am to 9am and 5pm to 7pm on weekdays. Outside those windows, crossing the city takes twenty minutes. On the last Saturday of most months a community work morning called Umuganda restricts non essential movement until around 11am, so plan departures around it.
Parking, fuel and the practical details
- Paid street parking is managed by attendants in the city centre and is inexpensive
- Hotels, malls and office parks have guarded parking, which is what we recommend overnight
- Fuel stations are plentiful across the city and most accept cards as well as cash
- Never leave luggage or a laptop visible in a parked car, the same rule as any capital
- Speed limits are camera enforced, 40 to 60 km/h across most of the urban area

Which car suits city use
For pure city driving, a compact SUV such as the Toyota RAV4 at USD 45 per day or the Kia Sorento at USD 50 per day is the sweet spot. Both are automatic, easy to park on tight ridge streets, and light on fuel.
If you plan to leave the city for Musanze, Akagera or Lake Kivu during the same rental, take the Land Cruiser Prado at USD 75 per day instead. It is the vehicle that handles both the tarmac commute and the park access roads without compromise.

Self Drive Kigali: FAQs
Is it safe to drive yourself around Kigali?
Yes. Kigali is widely regarded as one of the safest and best organised cities to drive in on the continent. Roads are maintained, driving is orderly by regional standards and carjacking is not a common risk here. Watch for motorcycle taxis filtering past you and for pedestrians on the shoulder after dark.
Do I need a 4x4 just for Kigali?
No, a compact SUV is plenty for the city. We still supply 4WD vehicles as standard because most guests take at least one trip out of the city, and the unpaved feeder roads inside some Kigali neighbourhoods are steep.
Can I get an automatic car in Kigali?
Yes. Our fleet is automatic, which most visitors prefer given the hills and the stop start traffic on the ridge roads.
Can you deliver the car to my hotel in Kigali?
Yes, delivery and collection anywhere in Kigali is free, including the airport. Call or WhatsApp +250 788 504 614 with your hotel name and the time you want the car.
