You take the vehicle and the freedom. This is the cheaper option and the one most couples and confident drivers choose. Rwanda drives on the right, the highways are good and the country is small, so self drive is genuinely relaxed here.

What is the difference between car hire and car rental?
Nothing. Car hire is the British and East African term, car rental is the American term, and both describe the same service. We use them interchangeably.
How much is car hire with a driver in Rwanda?
The driver fee depends on the itinerary, the daily hours and whether overnight stays outside Kigali are involved, so it is quoted per trip. Vehicles that always come with a driver are priced directly: the 15 seat Hiace at USD 160 per day and the 30 seat coaster bus at USD 180 per day.
Is it better to hire a car or use taxis in Rwanda?
For Kigali alone, ride hailing and taxis are fine. The moment your plans include Musanze, Akagera, Nyungwe or Lake Kivu, a hired vehicle is cheaper and far more flexible than paying for point to point transfers.
