4x4 Safari Rwanda
A Rwandan safari is a driving safari. Volcanoes, Akagera and Nyungwe are all reachable by road from Kigali in half a day, and the vehicle you choose decides whether the last twenty kilometres to the gate are easy or miserable. We rent the 4x4s built for those roads.

Match the vehicle to the park
- Volcanoes National Park, Musanze: steep volcanic access roads to the trailheads. Prado or Land Cruiser, especially in the rains.
- Akagera National Park, east: savannah tracks and river crossings on game drive loops. Land Cruiser, or the pop up roof Toyota Safari for photography.
- Nyungwe Forest, south west: long forest roads and mountain switchbacks. Prado or Land Cruiser.
- Lake Kivu and the Congo Nile trail: mixed tarmac and gravel. A RAV4 or Sorento copes in the dry season.
The safari fleet
- Toyota RAV4, USD 45 per day, 5 seats, best for couples on mostly sealed routes
- Kia Sorento, USD 50 per day, 7 seats, a comfortable mid size option
- Land Cruiser Prado, USD 75 per day, 7 seats, the all round safari choice
- Land Cruiser, USD 110 per day, 8 seats, for heavy loads and rough access roads
- Toyota Safari with pop up roof, USD 200 per day including a driver, 9 seats, purpose built for game viewing

Self drive safari or add a driver
Plenty of guests drive themselves to all three parks and enjoy it. The roads to the gates are signposted and the park staff at the entrance brief you before you go in.
A driver guide earns their fee inside Akagera, where knowing where the animals were yesterday matters, and on long transfer days when you would rather look out of the window. You can mix the two: self drive the transfers, add a driver for game drive days.
Practical safari preparation
- Book gorilla and chimpanzee permits with the Rwanda Development Board well in advance, they sell out
- Fill the tank in Musanze, Kayonza or Huye before the final leg, there is no fuel inside the parks
- Carry cash in Rwandan francs for gate fees, tips and rural purchases
- Start game drives at first light, which means sleeping close to the gate the night before
- Take the spare wheel check seriously, we do it with you at handover

4x4 Safari Rwanda: FAQs
Do I need a 4x4 for a safari in Rwanda?
Yes for the parks. Akagera game drive tracks, the Volcanoes access roads and the Nyungwe forest roads all reward ground clearance and four wheel drive, and in the March to May and October to November rains they effectively require it.
Which 4x4 is best for Akagera National Park?
A Toyota Land Cruiser, or the pop up roof Toyota Safari if photography is the priority. Akagera has genuine bush tracks, and the roof hatch lets you stand up to shoot wildlife without leaving the vehicle.
Can I drive myself inside the national parks?
Yes in Akagera, where self driven game drives are permitted and common, with the option to pick up a park guide at the gate. Gorilla and chimpanzee trekking are guided on foot, so the vehicle only takes you to the trailhead.
How much is a safari 4x4 in Rwanda per day?
From USD 45 per day for a RAV4 and USD 75 for a Prado on self drive, up to USD 110 for a Land Cruiser. A dedicated Toyota Safari with a pop up roof and a driver is USD 200 per day.
