Why self drive works so well in Rwanda
Distances here are short. Kigali to Musanze for gorilla trekking is roughly two and a half hours, Kigali to Akagera around two and a half, Kigali to Rubavu on Lake Kivu about three and a half. That means you can base yourself anywhere and still see the country without long transfer days.
The main highways are sealed and in good condition, fuel stations are frequent on the main routes, and mobile coverage is strong enough for live navigation almost everywhere you will drive. The parts that need a 4x4 are the park access roads and the rural feeder roads, which is exactly what our fleet is built for.
- Traffic drives on the right, the same side as the United States and most of Europe
- Roads are well maintained and speed limits are enforced with fixed cameras
- Every rental includes GPS navigation and a local SIM briefing at handover
- You choose the stops, the timings and the photo breaks, with no guide schedule
What you get with every self drive rental
- Comprehensive insurance on the vehicle, not a stripped basic cover
- Unlimited mileage anywhere inside Rwanda
- Full to full fuel policy with no refuelling surcharge
- Free delivery and collection at Kigali International Airport or your hotel
- GPS or offline map setup, plus a spare wheel, jack and brace checked in front of you
- 24/7 phone support and roadside assistance for the whole rental

Documents you need to drive yourself
Bring a valid driving licence held for at least two years, your passport, and an International Driving Permit if your licence is not in English or French. Visitors can drive on a foreign licence for a limited period on arrival, and we confirm the current rule with you at booking so there are no surprises at a checkpoint.
The minimum driver age is 23 for most of the fleet. Additional drivers can be added at no charge as long as they present the same documents.

Self Drive Rwanda: FAQs
Can tourists self drive in Rwanda?
Yes. Rwanda allows visitors to rent and drive a vehicle themselves with a valid foreign driving licence, supported by an International Driving Permit if the licence is not in English or French. Self drive is common and straightforward here.
Is self drive cheaper than hiring a car with a driver?
Yes. Self drive removes the driver fee and the driver allowance, so for a couple or a confident driver it is normally the cheaper option. A driver becomes better value for large groups, tight business schedules or anyone who does not want to drive on unfamiliar roads.
Do I need a 4x4 for self drive in Rwanda?
For Kigali and the main tarmac highways a compact SUV is fine. For Volcanoes, Akagera, Nyungwe and rural feeder roads, and for anything during the rains, a 4x4 with real ground clearance is the safer choice. All our vehicles are 4WD for this reason.
How do I book a self drive car in Rwanda?
Call or WhatsApp +250 788 504 614 with your dates, the vehicle you want and your pickup point. We confirm availability, hold the vehicle and deliver it to Kigali airport or your hotel on the day.
