Kigali is where almost every Rwanda trip starts, and many visitors spend a day or two here before heading to the parks. A car in Kigali is not essential in the way it is for the rest of the country, but it turns a scattered list of places into an easy day. Here is what the city looks like from behind the wheel.
Is it worth renting a car in Kigali?
If you are only in the city for a conference, taxis and ride hailing apps work well. If Kigali is the first stop on a longer trip, rent the car from the start. You collect it at the airport, use it for a day in the city and drive out to the parks without a second handover. For stays of a week or more in Kigali itself, a car usually costs less than daily taxis across town.
Places visitors drive to in Kigali
Kigali Genocide Memorial
The most important visit in the city and the one to do first. Allow at least two hours. There is parking on site. Entry is free, and donations support the memorial's work.
Kimironko Market
The busiest market in Kigali, for fabric, tailoring, fruit and crafts. Park on the outer streets and walk in, because the lanes around the market are tight and busy.
Nyamirambo
Kigali's oldest and liveliest neighbourhood, known for its walking tours, cafes and the Green Mosque. Leave the car and walk this one.
Inema Arts Center and the gallery scene
Contemporary Rwandan art in Kacyiru, a short drive from most hotels.
Mount Kigali
A drive and short hike up to views over the whole city, best in the early morning before the haze.
Kigali Convention Centre and the Kimihurura restaurants
The dome that lights up at night is the city's landmark, and the surrounding hills are where many of Kigali's best restaurants sit.
Events that fill Kigali's hotels
Kigali has become one of Africa's busiest event cities, and the big weeks book out cars as fast as rooms. BK Arena has hosted the Basketball Africa League playoffs and finals, won in May 2026 by Rwanda's own RSSB Tigers. The Giants of Africa Festival ran in the city from late July into early August 2026, and the Tour du Rwanda cycling race comes through every February. If your dates overlap a major event, book the car when you book the hotel.
Driving in Kigali: what to expect
- Roads are good and clean. Most main roads are paved, well lit and well marked, and Kigali is famously tidy.
- Motorbike taxis are everywhere. They filter between lanes and stop suddenly for passengers. Check your mirrors before every turn.
- Roundabouts are frequent. Traffic already on the roundabout has priority.
- Speed cameras are real. Keep to 40 to 60 km/h in town.
- Hills are steep. All our cars are automatic, which takes the stress out of hill starts.
- Car Free Day. On certain Sunday mornings, some central roads close for walking and cycling. Check before planning an early Sunday drive.

Which rental car suits Kigali
For the city alone, a Toyota RAV4 at USD 45 per day is plenty: compact enough for tight market streets, high enough for speed bumps and ready for the drive out of town. Families with luggage and car seats find the Kia Sorento at USD 50 easier. There is no need for a Land Cruiser in Kigali unless your trip continues to Akagera or into the rains.
