Car Rental to Akagera National Park for Safari
Planning an Akagera safari? Here is the best car to rent, the drive from Kigali, and how to self-drive the park to see the Big Five.
Akagera National Park in eastern Rwanda is a Big Five savannah park and one of the best self-drive safaris in the country. A suitable rental car lets you explore the tracks at your own pace.
The drive from Kigali to Akagera
The main southern gate is about 2.5 to 3 hours from Kigali on good roads. Inside the park the game tracks are dirt and can be rough, so a 4x4 is strongly recommended.
Best vehicle for Akagera
A high-clearance 4x4 such as the Land Cruiser or Prado is ideal for the park tracks and river crossings. A standard SUV can reach the gate but is less comfortable on the game trails.
Self-drive safari tips
- Enter early for the best wildlife sightings
- Carry the park map and drive slowly on the tracks
- Keep windows up near predators and never leave the vehicle except at marked spots
- Fuel up before you arrive, there are no stations inside
Driver option
An experienced safari driver knows where the animals gather and handles the tracks, which many first-time visitors prefer. See the safari car rental page.
