Nyungwe National Park in the southwest is a vast montane rainforest famous for chimpanzee tracking and its canopy walkway. It is a long but scenic drive, and the right rental car makes it easy.
The drive from Kigali to Nyungwe
Expect around 5 to 6 hours via Huye (Butare). The roads are mostly good tarmac but very winding as you climb into the forest, so allow plenty of time and drive carefully.
Best vehicle for Nyungwe
A comfortable SUV or 4x4 from our fleet handles the long, hilly route best. A Prado or Land Cruiser is the most comfortable choice for the distance and altitude.
Break the journey
Many visitors overnight near Huye or at Lake Kivu on the way. Combining Nyungwe with a Lake Kivu road trip makes a superb loop.
