More travellers are choosing to rent a car with a driver in Rwanda, and it is not always because they are nervous about the roads. A good local driver is a navigator, translator, fixer and, often, the most interesting conversation of the trip. Here is what a driver really adds, what it costs, and when it is worth it.

What a private driver in Rwanda does

• Drives, obviously, on roads they know well, in all weather, including the tracks to the gorilla trailheads and inside Akagera.
• Handles the logistics: park check ins, parking, fuel stops, checkpoints and finding the lodge down an unmarked lane.
• Translates: English and Kinyarwanda, and most of our drivers also speak French.

How pricing works

The structure is simple: the daily rate for the vehicle plus a daily driver fee. On overnight trips outside Kigali, the driver's accommodation and meals are agreed in the quote up front, so there is nothing to settle on the road. Vehicle rates are USD 45 per day for a RAV4, USD 50 for a Sorento or Tucson, USD 75 for a Prado and USD 110 for a Land Cruiser.

Group vehicles always come with a driver and are priced as a package:

• Toyota Hiace minibus, 15 seats: USD 160 per day including driver.
• Coaster bus, 30 seats: USD 180 per day including driver.
• Toyota Safari with pop up roof, 9 seats: USD 200 per day including driver.

When a driver is clearly the right call

Business in Kigali

A car with a driver in Kigali means no parking, no navigation and no waiting for taxis between meetings. Your driver waits outside and knows the building. See chauffeur service.

Groups of eight or more

A 15 seat Hiace with a driver at USD 160 per day is cheaper than two self drive vehicles with two fuel bills, and everyone travels together.

Akagera game drives

A driver who knows where the lions were yesterday is worth more than any map. It also means everyone in the car is looking for animals.

Visitors from left hand traffic countries

If you drive on the left at home and do not want to relearn the road in the hills, a driver removes the problem.

Short trips with a tight schedule

On a four day gorilla and Kigali trip, a driver lets you sleep between the dawn trek and the evening flight.

The mixed approach

Many travellers combine the two. They take a driver for the first days, including the airport pickup and the Akagera game drives, then switch to self drive for Lake Kivu and Nyungwe once they know the roads. We arrange this in a single booking.

How to hire a good driver in Rwanda

• Ask whether the driver is employed by the rental company or a casual hire.
