Yes, in most cases you can take a Rwandan rental car across the border into neighbouring countries — but it must be arranged in advance. Crossing without permission voids your insurance.

Countries you can usually drive to

    • Uganda — a popular route for combined gorilla and wildlife trips.
    • Tanzania — for onward safari itineraries.
    • Kenya, Burundi and the DRC — possible on request, subject to conditions.

What you need for a cross-border trip

    • Written authorisation from the rental company to leave Rwanda.
    • Cross-border insurance / COMESA Yellow Card for the destination country.
    • The vehicle registration and your own travel documents and visas.

    Plan ahead

Tell us your full itinerary when you book so we can prepare the correct paperwork and quote any cross-border fees. Give at least a few days' notice — some documents take time to process. Message us on WhatsApp with your route and we'll sort the details.
