Can You Do Gorilla Trekking Alone in Rwanda? How Group Treks Really Work
Solo gorilla trekking in Rwanda is not really a thing. Here is how permits, groups, rangers and porters actually work, and how to drive yourself to the trailhead.
Many travellers ask whether they can trek gorillas on their own in Rwanda, away from any group. The short answer is no. You cannot enter a gorilla family's home range by yourself, and there is a good reason for it. Below is how the experience is really organised, and how to reach Volcanoes National Park under your own steam.
You are always placed in a small group
Rwanda protects each habituated gorilla family by limiting visits to eight people per day. When you buy a permit you are assigned to one family and one group of up to eight trekkers on the morning of your visit. This keeps stress on the gorillas low and reduces the risk of passing human illness to them. So even if you travel alone, you walk with others once the trek begins.
Rangers and trackers lead every trek
An armed park ranger and a team of trackers guide your group from the briefing point to the gorillas and back. Trackers set out early to locate the family, then radio your ranger, which is why some treks are short and others take hours. Walking off on your own is not permitted at any point.
Porters are worth hiring
At the trailhead you can hire a porter who carries your daypack and steadies you on steep, muddy sections. It is a small cost that supports local families and makes the climb far easier, especially at altitude.
What a gorilla permit costs and how to get one
Permits are issued by the Rwanda Development Board and demand is high in peak season, so book weeks ahead. Your tour operator or lodge can secure one for you, and you carry proof to the morning briefing along with your passport.
Best time to trek
Trekking runs all year. The drier months of June to September and December to February give firmer trails, though gorillas are found daily whatever the weather. Pack a rain jacket regardless.

Can I trek gorillas completely alone?
No. You are grouped with up to seven other trekkers and led by a ranger and trackers. Private access is not allowed.
Do I need to join an organised tour?
