SUV Rental in Rwanda: Comfort, Clearance and What You Pay
SUV hire in Rwanda covers everything from a compact RAV4 to a full size Land Cruiser. Here is how the categories differ in comfort, capability and running cost, and how to pick.
Almost every rental car in Rwanda is an SUV of some kind, and there is a practical reason for that. Between the hills, the speed bumps, the unpaved feeder roads and the rainy seasons, ride height is genuinely useful here in a way it is not in most of Europe. But "SUV" spans a wide range, and the categories are worth separating.
The three SUV categories in Rwanda
Compact SUV
Toyota RAV4, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage. Front wheel or all wheel drive, car like to drive, economical, easy to park. Right for Kigali, business travel and paved touring routes. The lowest daily rate and the lowest fuel bill.
Mid size 4x4
Toyota Prado, Kia Sorento, Mitsubishi Pajero. Low range four wheel drive, more clearance, more space, more comfort over long distances. This is the category most tourist itineraries should be in.
Full size 4x4
Toyota Land Cruiser in its various forms, including the pop up roof safari conversion. Maximum capability, maximum space, highest rate and highest fuel consumption.
What you are actually paying for as you move up
- Ground clearance, which decides whether a rutted track is routine or a problem.
- Low range gearing, which decides whether a steep muddy climb is possible at all.
- Luggage and passenger space, which decides whether a five person trip is comfortable or cramped.
- Ride quality over distance, which decides how you feel at the end of a four hour drive.
- Load capacity, for rooftop tents, camping kit and long trips.
What you are not paying for is speed. Rwandan speed limits are low and enforced, so a bigger engine buys you nothing on the open road.
Choosing honestly
The most common mistake is booking too small to save money, then meeting a wet track to a lodge. The second most common is booking a V8 for a trip that never leaves tarmac and paying for fuel you did not need.
Ask yourself three questions:
- Will I drive on unpaved roads? If yes, at least a mid size 4x4.
- Am I travelling in the long rains, March to May or October to November? If yes, at least a mid size 4x4.
- How many people and bags? Four or more with full luggage means mid size at minimum, and full size if you are camping.
If all three answers point to tarmac, dry season and two people, take the compact and enjoy the saving.
Automatic versus manual
Both are available across the categories. Automatics are worth requesting if you are unfamiliar with driving on the right, if you will be in Kigali traffic often, or if the hill starts on steep unpaved roads worry you. Manuals give slightly better control in deep mud and are sometimes cheaper. See automatic transmission car rental in Rwanda.
