Step 1: the paperwork
Police checkpoints are routine on the main highways and are a normal part of driving here. They are quick and courteous. Have the licence and the vehicle documents ready and you will be waved through in under a minute.
- A valid driving licence held for at least two years
- An International Driving Permit if your licence is not issued in English or French
- Your passport, which is also checked at any border crossing
- The rental agreement and insurance certificate, which stay in the glovebox
- A yellow fever certificate if you are arriving from a country where it is required
Step 2: understand the road conditions by season
Rwanda has two rainy seasons, roughly March to May and October to November, and two drier windows in between. The tarmac is fine year round. What changes is the unpaved feeder roads and the park access tracks, which turn slick and rutted in the rains.
If you are travelling in a wet month and your itinerary includes Volcanoes National Park, Nyungwe or Akagera, take a proper 4x4 rather than a compact SUV. It is the single decision that most affects how the trip goes.
Step 3: budget the trip honestly
- Vehicle: from USD 45 per day for a Toyota RAV4, USD 75 for a Prado, USD 110 for a Land Cruiser
- Weekly rates cut the daily cost, for example USD 280 per week on the RAV4
- Fuel is the main variable, and a big 4x4 uses noticeably more than a compact SUV
- Park entry and gorilla permits are paid separately to the Rwanda Development Board
- Comprehensive insurance and unlimited mileage inside Rwanda are already in our rate
Step 4: the local rules that surprise people
- Single use plastic bags are banned and bags are checked on arrival at the airport
- Do not photograph government buildings, military sites or the airport
- Umuganda community work runs on the last Saturday morning of most months
- Seatbelts are compulsory front and rear and this is actively enforced
- Avoid driving between towns after dark, which is the single biggest road risk here
- Drink driving enforcement is strict, with roadside breath testing common at night
Step 5: pick the right vehicle for the itinerary
Two people staying on tarmac in the dry season: a RAV4 or a Kia Sorento is enough, easier to park and cheaper to fuel.

Which side of the road does Rwanda drive on?
Rwanda drives on the right hand side of the road, the same as the United States, Canada and continental Europe. Visitors from the UK, Ireland, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania need a short adjustment period.
Do I need an International Driving Permit in Rwanda?
You need one if your national licence is not printed in English or French. Even where it is not strictly required, an IDP is inexpensive and removes any argument at a checkpoint or a border, so we recommend carrying one.
How much does a week of self driving in Rwanda cost?
The vehicle itself starts at USD 280 per week for a Toyota RAV4 with comprehensive insurance and unlimited mileage inside Rwanda. Add fuel, accommodation, park entry and permits on top. A Prado week is USD 450 and a Land Cruiser week is USD 650.
Is Google Maps reliable in Rwanda?
On the main routes, yes, and mobile data coverage is good. For rural feeder roads and park tracks it can suggest routes that are impassable in a normal car, so we brief you on the sensible route at handover and recommend downloading offline maps before you leave Kigali.
