An hour with a mountain gorilla family is the reason most people come to Rwanda. The permit is expensive and the morning starts early, so the logistics matter more than on any other day of the trip. A rental car gives you control over the one thing tour groups struggle with: being at Kinigi on time, rested, without depending on anyone else.
Gorilla permits in 2026
- Standard permit: USD 1,500 per person for international visitors.
- Low season discount: 30 percent off, USD 1,050, from November to May, when you also spend two nights in Akagera or Nyungwe, or one night in each.
- Minimum age: 15.
- Book: three to six months ahead for June to October, and as early as you can for any date.
For self drive travellers, the discount is the most useful rule in Rwandan tourism. You are driving past Akagera and Nyungwe anyway. Spend two nights there between November and May and each permit drops by USD 450.
Getting to Volcanoes National Park by car
From Kigali, it is about two to two and a half hours to Musanze on a paved, well engineered mountain road with spectacular views. From Musanze town, the park headquarters at Kinigi is about 30 minutes further.
Plan to arrive the day before your trek. The briefing at Kinigi starts at 7am, and the drive from Kigali in the dark before dawn is not worth the risk to a USD 1,500 permit.
Trek day, step by step
- Leave Musanze by 6:15am and arrive at Kinigi before 7am. Bring your passport and permit.
- Briefing and group allocation. Rangers assign each group of up to eight trekkers to a gorilla family, taking fitness into account. Tell them honestly if you want a shorter walk.
- Drive to the trailhead. Your group drives in convoy, in your own car, to the start point for your gorilla family. Some are close to the headquarters, others 30 to 60 minutes away on rough tracks.
- Trek. Anything from under an hour to several hours each way, then one hour with the gorillas.
- Drive back. Most groups are back in Musanze by early afternoon.
Which car for gorilla trekking
The paved road gets you to Kinigi in any car. The trailhead tracks are what matter.
- Toyota RAV4, USD 45 per day: fine in the dry season, June to September and mid December to February.
- Land Cruiser Prado, USD 75 per day: ideal all year and the most comfortable choice in the rains.
- Toyota Land Cruiser, USD 110 per day: the safest option in the wettest weeks, or if you are continuing into Uganda.

Where to stay
With a car, you can choose. Musanze town has good value hotels and guesthouses about 30 minutes from Kinigi. The lodges on the park edge are closer and more luxurious, and far more expensive. For most self drive travellers, Musanze is the sweet spot.
