Car Rental to Volcanoes National Park for Gorilla Trekking
How to rent the right car for Volcanoes National Park and gorilla trekking, plus the drive from Kigali to Musanze and what to expect.
Volcanoes National Park in the north is Rwanda's gorilla trekking base, near the town of Musanze. Renting the right car makes the trip smooth and comfortable. Here is what you need to know.
The drive from Kigali to Musanze
It is roughly a 2.5 to 3 hour drive on good tarmac through beautiful hills. The park headquarters at Kinigi is a short drive on rougher roads beyond Musanze, where a 4x4 earns its keep.
Best vehicle for Volcanoes
Choose a 4x4 such as the Land Cruiser Prado or Land Cruiser. The final tracks to trailheads can be muddy, especially in the rainy season, and a 4x4 gives you clearance and grip. Read do I need a 4x4 in Rwanda.
Self-drive or driver?
Self-drive works well if you are comfortable on mountain roads. Many trekkers add a driver so they can rest before an early, demanding hike. See the safari car rental page.
Planning tips
