Car Rental for Lake Kivu Rwanda: Rubavu, Karongi, Rusizi
How to explore Lake Kivu by rental car: the three lake towns, the shore road, islands, coffee tours, hot springs and the Congo Nile Trail, with drive times and which car suits each stretch.
Lake Kivu is where Rwanda slows down. After early starts for gorillas and game drives, the lake offers beaches, boat trips, coffee farms and some of the most beautiful roads in the country. It stretches along Rwanda's western border, and the best way to see it is with your own car.
The three lake towns
Rubavu (Gisenyi)
The northern town, about three to three and a half hours from Kigali or about an hour and a half from Musanze. It has sandy beaches, lakeside hotels and a relaxed, palm lined waterfront. Nearby are natural hot springs and fishing villages.
Karongi (Kibuye)
In the middle of the lake, set among steep green hills and islands. Take a boat to Napoleon's Island, home to a large colony of fruit bats, and to Amahoro Island. At dusk, listen for the fishermen singing as they row out for the night.
Rusizi (Cyangugu)
At the southern tip of the lake, close to Nyungwe Forest and the border with the DRC. Quieter and less visited, and a natural stop between the lake and the forest.
Driving the Lake Kivu shore road
The road between Rubavu, Karongi and Rusizi follows the lake through coffee, banana and tea country, climbing and falling constantly. Surfaces vary: some sections are good, others rough and slow. Allow around three hours from Rubavu to Karongi without stops and longer again from Karongi to Rusizi. It is best in daylight and dry weather, and far more comfortable in a higher clearance car.
Things to do on Lake Kivu
- Boat trips from Rubavu and Karongi to the islands.
- Coffee tours at washing stations along the Kivu Belt, known for some of Rwanda's best coffee.
- Hot springs near Rubavu, where locals bathe in naturally heated water on the lake shore.
- The Congo Nile Trail, a long distance hiking and cycling route along the lake. You can walk or cycle a section and meet your car at the end.
- Kayaking and swimming from the beaches, depending on conditions.
- Gishwati-Mukura National Park inland from the lake, for chimpanzees and forest walks away from the crowds.
How Lake Kivu fits a Rwanda itinerary
Most travellers arrive at Rubavu from Musanze after gorilla trekking, spend a night or two, then either return to Kigali or follow the shore road south to Karongi and on to Nyungwe. A three day Lake Kivu itinerary by car
Day 1: Musanze to Rubavu
A short, scenic drive of about an hour and a half after gorilla trekking. Spend the afternoon on the beach and watch the sunset over the lake.
Day 2: Rubavu
Morning boat trip, then the hot springs and a coffee tour. If you are feeling active, cycle or walk the first section of the Congo Nile Trail.
Day 3: Rubavu to Karongi
Leave after breakfast and take the shore road slowly, with stops at viewpoints above the lake. Arrive in Karongi for the late afternoon boat to Napoleon's Island and the singing fishermen at dusk.
From Karongi, you can return to Kigali in about three hours or continue south to Rusizi and Nyungwe.
Which car for Lake Kivu
- Toyota RAV4, USD 45 per day: Kigali or Musanze to Rubavu and back on paved roads.
- Land Cruiser Prado, USD 75 per day: the full shore road from Rubavu to Rusizi, especially in the rainy months.

Rubavu is about three to three and a half hours from Kigali by road. Karongi is a similar distance by the inland route.
Is the Lake Kivu road paved?

Do I need a 4x4 for Lake Kivu?
Not to reach Rubavu. For the full shore road, especially in the rain, a Prado is much more comfortable.
How many days should I spend at Lake Kivu?
Two to three nights lets you rest and enjoy one or two towns. Five nights covers the full shore.
