Self Drive Rwanda Road Trip: A 10 Day Loop for 2026
A ten day self drive loop through Rwanda that takes in Akagera, the gorillas, Lake Kivu and Nyungwe, paced for real drive times, with the nights arranged to earn the low season gorilla permit discount.
Ten days is the length we recommend most for a first self drive road trip in Rwanda. It is long enough to see all four major landscapes, savannah, volcanoes, lake and rainforest, without a single day that feels like a transfer. It is also arranged so that, from November to May, the nights in Akagera and Nyungwe qualify you for the 30 percent gorilla permit discount.

Day by day
Day 1: arrive in Kigali
Collect the car at Kigali International Airport, check in and spend the afternoon at the Kigali Genocide Memorial. Buy a SIM and some Rwandan francs, and fill the tank for the morning.
Days 2 and 3: Akagera National Park
Leave early and enter the park by mid morning. Self drive the southern lake loops on the first afternoon, then spend day three on the northern plains, where lions and rhinos are most often found. The afternoon boat trip on Lake Ihema is one of the best value activities in the country, with hippos, crocodiles and water birds at close range. Day 4: across the country to Musanze
The longest driving day, back through Kigali and north west into the hills. Stop in Kigali for lunch and supplies. Aim to reach Musanze by late afternoon.
Day 5: gorilla trekking
Be at the park headquarters in Kinigi before the 7am briefing. After the trek, visit the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund nearby to understand the conservation story behind the hour you just spent. See car rental for gorilla trekking.
Day 6: down to Lake Kivu
A short, beautiful drive from Musanze to Rubavu, with the volcanoes behind you and the lake ahead. Spend the afternoon on the beach or take a boat out on the lake.
Day 7: the lake shore to Karongi
The road between Rubavu and Karongi winds through coffee and tea country above the lake. Surfaces vary and the bends are tight, so allow around three hours without stops and more with them. This is the day a higher clearance car is most welcome. In Karongi, take a boat to Napoleon's Island and Amahoro Island at sunset.
Day 8: climbing to Nyungwe
Continue south towards Rusizi and then climb east into the forest, or cut inland directly, depending on road conditions. Either way, arrive in time for an afternoon walk.
Day 9: Nyungwe
Chimpanzee trekking starts before dawn and costs USD 150. The canopy walk, USD 40, is best in the late morning when the mist lifts. Park entry is USD 100. See our Nyungwe road trip guide.
Day 10: back to Kigali
The long drive east out of the forest, through the tea estates, then north through Huye and Nyanza on good paved roads. If you have a late flight, stop at the King's Palace Museum on the way. Return the car at the airport.
Which car for this road trip
In the dry season, a Toyota RAV4 at USD 45 per day handles every day except Akagera's north and the rougher parts of the lake shore road comfortably. How to adapt the loop
- Only seven days? Drop the Karongi night and drive Rubavu to Nyungwe in one long day, or skip Nyungwe and return from Rubavu. See our seven day itinerary.
- Fourteen days? Add Gishwati-Mukura National Park for chimps between Rubavu and Karongi, a second night in Musanze for golden monkeys or a Bisoke crater hike, and a night in Huye.
