Car Rental in Rwanda for Travelers From Asia and the Gulf

Rwanda has become far easier to reach from Asia and the Gulf, with convenient connections through Doha, Dubai, Istanbul, Addis Ababa and Nairobi from Beijing, Shanghai, Delhi, Mumbai, Bangkok, Singapore, Tokyo and Guangzhou. Business travelers and tourists arriving from these markets ask a fairly consistent set of questions before hiring a car in Kigali. Here are the answers.

Which Asian driving licences are accepted in Rwanda?

Rwanda accepts a valid foreign driving licence for visitors. The practical rule is about language: if your licence is printed in English or French you can usually present it directly. If it is printed only in Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Arabic or another script, you must carry an International Driving Permit issued in your home country alongside the original licence. Indian, Singaporean, Malaysian, Filipino and most Gulf licences are typically in English already, though an IDP is still a sensible backup.

A note for travelers from mainland China

China does not issue IDPs under the international conventions, so Chinese drivers should ask us in advance. In practice most visitors from China either arrange a certified translation of their licence or hire a car with a driver, which removes the paperwork question completely. Rwanda drives on the right

This is the single biggest adjustment for visitors from India, Japan, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Hong Kong and Pakistan, where traffic drives on the left. Rwanda drives on the right hand side using left hand drive cars, like China, Korea, the Philippines, Vietnam and the Gulf states.

If you are coming from a left hand traffic country, plan for it:

• Take the first drive slowly and in daylight if you can.
• Roundabouts run anticlockwise, and you give way to traffic approaching from your left.
• Overtake on the left of the vehicle in front.
• Ask us for an automatic vehicle so you are not also managing an unfamiliar gear hand.

Alternatively, hire the car with one of our drivers for the first day or two and switch to self drive once you have watched the traffic rhythm.

Road conditions and driving culture

Rwandan main roads are paved, well maintained and clearly signposted, and the country is famously orderly compared with much of the region. Traffic is far lighter than in Delhi, Bangkok, Jakarta or Manila, and lane discipline is genuinely observed. Speed limits are enforced with cameras and police checkpoints, typically 40 to 60 km/h in town and 80 km/h on open road. Motorcycle taxis, known locally as motos, are everywhere in Kigali and are the main thing to watch for.

Food

Kigali has Indian, Chinese, Thai and Middle Eastern restaurants, and halal food is available in the city and in Muslim neighbourhoods such as Nyamirambo. Vegetarian travelers manage easily in Kigali. Outside the capital, options narrow considerably, so carry snacks on long drives and consider self catering if you have strict dietary requirements.

Money and connectivity

The local currency is the Rwandan franc. US dollars are widely exchanged, cards are accepted in Kigali hotels and larger businesses, and mobile money is ubiquitous. Buy a local SIM at the airport for cheap data. WeChat, WhatsApp and Line all work normally.

Time zone and jet lag

Rwanda is UTC+2, so it is roughly six hours behind Beijing and Singapore, four and a half behind India, and one hour behind Dubai. Travelers from the Gulf can drive on arrival day comfortably. Those from East Asia often prefer a driver for the first day.
