Once your group passes five people, hiring separate cars stops making sense. You pay several rental rates, several fuel bills, and you spend the trip losing each other at junctions. A single van or minibus with a driver is usually cheaper per head and far less stressful. Here is how group transport works in Rwanda.

The vehicle options, by group size

7 to 8 passengers: seven seat 4x4 or minivan

A seven seat Prado or a Toyota Noah style minivan. The 4x4 option matters if you are going to Volcanoes or Akagera. The minivan is more comfortable and cheaper if you are staying on tarmac.

9 to 14 passengers: Toyota Hiace minibus

The workhorse of East African group travel. Comfortable on tarmac, economical per head, and available in higher roof versions with decent luggage space. Not suitable for rough park tracks.

15 to 28 passengers: Toyota Coaster bus

The standard choice for conferences, church groups, school trips and large family reunions. Air conditioned, luggage compartment, comes with a driver.

Mixed itineraries: a convoy of 4x4s

If your group is going into Akagera or up to the gorilla trailheads, minibuses cannot follow. The standard solution is two or three Land Cruisers travelling together, which also gives everyone a window seat and a pop up roof for game viewing. See our safari vehicle guide.

Group transport almost always comes with a driver

Minibuses and coasters are effectively never self drive rentals in Rwanda, and that is sensible. They handle differently when loaded, they are wide for Kigali streets, and the driver deals with parking, park gates and route planning while you deal with your group. The driver fee is spread across the whole group, so per person it is negligible.

    Working out cost per person

Do the arithmetic before you decide. A 12 person group in three separate rental cars pays three daily rates, three fuel bills and needs three confident drivers. The same group in one Hiace pays one rate and one fuel bill. In practice the minibus is usually well under half the cost per head on tarmac routes, and everybody arrives at the same time.

Where a convoy of 4x4s wins is capability and comfort on safari, not price.

    Common Rwandan group itineraries

    • Conference and delegation transfers. Airport to hotel to venue, on schedule, repeatedly. See our conference travel guide.
    • Family reunions and diaspora visits. Kigali, the memorial, the family village, Lake Kivu.
    • Church and school groups. Multi stop routes across several provinces.
    • Wedding parties. Guest shuttles plus a smart car for the couple, see wedding car rental in Kigali.
    • NGO field teams. Regular runs to project sites, often needing 4x4s rather than a bus.
    • Tour groups. The classic circuit with a driver who knows every stop.

    3. Whether any part of the route is unpaved or inside a national park.
    4. Pickup points, especially if people arrive on different flights.
    5. Whether you need an invoice for a company or NGO, which we can issue.

    Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to hire a minibus in Rwanda?

Rates depend on size, days and distance, and always include a driver. Send your group size and itinerary and we will quote a total and a per person figure.

Can a minibus go to Volcanoes or Akagera?

A minibus reaches Musanze town and the Akagera gate on tarmac, but not the rough trailhead tracks or the internal park loops. For those, use 4x4s.

Can I self drive a van in Rwanda?

Seven seat 4x4s and small minivans can be self drive. Hiace minibuses and Coaster buses come with a driver.

Do you provide airport transfers for large groups?

Yes, including multiple flights on the same day. Send us the flight numbers and we will meet each one.
