A private driver in Kigali is not an extravagance. For business visitors, families, older travelers and anyone who would rather look at Rwanda than navigate it, a chauffeur driven car is often the better value booking. Here is how the service works in practice.

The three ways to book a chauffeur in Kigali

    By the transfer

A single journey, most commonly airport to hotel or hotel to a venue. Fixed price, driver waits if your flight is late. See our airport transfer page.

    By the day

The driver and vehicle are yours for an agreed working day, typically eight to ten hours, with overtime by arrangement. This is the standard booking for business days in Kigali and for day trips out of the city.

    By the trip

Multi day touring, where the driver travels with you around the country. On these, the accepted regional practice is that the client covers the driver's accommodation and meals, or pays a modest per diem. Rwandan lodges almost all have driver rooms at low rates, so this adds little.

What a professional Rwandan driver actually provides

    • Navigation and route judgement, including which road is passable after rain.
    • Parking, which in central Kigali between back to back meetings is worth the fee on its own.
    • Language. English and Kinyarwanda, usually French, often Swahili. Useful at markets, fuel stops and rural stops.
    • Local knowledge: where to eat, when to leave to beat traffic, how long the drive really takes.
    • Park gate and checkpoint procedure, handled without you thinking about it.
    • Continuity. On a multi day trip the same driver learns your pace and preferences.

A driver is not the same as a licensed park guide. Gorilla trek rangers and wildlife guides are separate professionals arranged at the park.

Who books a private driver, and why

    • Business visitors with several meetings a day across Kimihurura, Nyarutarama, Kacyiru and the centre.
    • Delegations and conference attendees, see executive car rental in Kigali.
    • Visitors from left hand traffic countries who would rather not relearn the road here. See driving on the right.
    • Travelers whose licence is not in English or French and who have no International Driving Permit.
    • Families with young children or travelers with limited mobility.
    • Anyone who wants to enjoy the scenery, which on the Lake Kivu road is a serious argument.

How to brief a driver so the day works

    1. Share the day's schedule the night before, including addresses and any early start.
    2. Agree the start and finish time, and what overtime costs.
    3. Say whether the driver waits on site or is called back, since that changes their planning.
    4. Make a plan for their lunch, or include them.
    5. Give them your phone number, and save theirs.
    6. Say up front if you want quiet in the car. Nobody minds, and it avoids awkwardness.

    Chauffeur or self drive?

Self drive is cheaper and gives you total spontaneity, and Rwanda is an easy country to drive. A chauffeur costs a daily fee and buys you attention, local knowledge and the ability to work or rest while moving. Many visitors do both: a driver for the arrival day and the business days, self drive for the touring days. We can add or remove a driver mid rental with a day's notice. Compare the numbers in is it cheaper to rent a car or hire a driver, and read the fuller car with driver guide.
