Switching sides is not difficult when you are concentrating. The risk is in the moments when you are not: pulling out of a quiet hotel car park, turning onto an empty road, or reacting to something unexpected. The seven things that actually change

1. Your position in the car. You sit on the left, the road centre line is on your left shoulder. If the centre line is on your right, you are on the wrong side.
2. The gear lever is on your right. You will reach for the door handle to change gear at least once. Book an automatic if you want to remove this entirely.
3. Indicators and wipers may be swapped. Expect to wipe the windscreen when you meant to indicate. It is harmless and you will adjust within a day.
4. Roundabouts run anticlockwise. You enter turning right, and you give way to traffic already circulating, which approaches from your left.
5. Turns are reversed. A right turn is the short, tight turn that stays on your side. A left turn is the long one that crosses oncoming traffic.
6. Overtaking is on the left. You pull out to the left of the vehicle ahead.
7. Your mirror instincts are mirrored. Consciously check the blind spot you are not used to checking.

Practical tactics for your first day
