How to choose between a cheap self drive SUV and a proper 4x4 in Rwanda, route by route and month by month, so you pay for capability only where the road actually needs it.
The cheapest self drive car in Rwanda costs USD 45 per day. A full size Toyota Land Cruiser costs USD 110. The difference over two weeks is close to a thousand dollars, plus extra fuel. Sometimes it is money well spent. Often it is not. This is how to decide.
All our self drive cars are 4x4. The question is how much.
Every car in our self drive fleet has four wheel drive, an automatic gearbox, air conditioning and GPS. So the choice is not really between a car and a 4x4. It is between a compact SUV built on a car platform, such as the RAV4, and a body on frame off roader, such as the Prado and Land Cruiser, with more ground clearance, stronger suspension and low range gearing.

Where a cheap self drive car is enough
- Kigali and day trips to Nyanza, Huye, Lake Muhazi and the memorials.
- Kigali to Musanze, which is paved all the way. The final tracks to some gorilla trailheads are rough but usually manageable in a RAV4 in dry weather.
- Musanze to Rubavu and the Lake Kivu beaches.
- Kigali to Nyungwe via Huye, paved all the way through the forest.
- Akagera's southern loops around the lakes in the dry season.
If your trip fits this list and you are travelling between June and September or in January and February, the RAV4 is the smart choice.
Where a 4x4 self drive in Rwanda is worth paying for
Akagera's northern plains
The best game viewing in Akagera, including the northern plains where lions and rhinos are most often seen, is on tracks that turn to deep ruts and black cotton mud in the rain. A Prado or Land Cruiser is the right tool.
The lake shore road along Kivu
Between Rubavu, Karongi and Rusizi the surface varies, and some stretches are rough, steep and slow. A higher clearance car is far more comfortable here.
March to May and October to November
In the rains, unpaved lodge access roads and trailhead tracks become slippery. The rate difference is small compared with a lost day.
Crossing into Uganda
Roads towards Bwindi are steep, unpaved and often wet. We recommend a Prado or Land Cruiser for any cross border trip.
The smart compromise
