4x4 SUV Rental Rwanda: RAV4 vs Prado vs Land Cruiser
A straight comparison of the three SUVs most visitors choose between in Rwanda, on price, seats, fuel, capability and comfort, with a clear recommendation for each type of trip.
Nearly every SUV rental decision in Rwanda comes down to three vehicles: the Toyota RAV4, the Land Cruiser Prado and the Toyota Land Cruiser. They sit at USD 45, USD 75 and USD 110 a day, and the gap between the ends of that range is large enough to be worth ten minutes of thought.
The comparison at a glance
Toyota RAV4
- USD 45 per day, USD 280 per week
- 5 seats, automatic, 4WD, air conditioning, GPS
- Lowest fuel consumption of the three by a clear margin
- Easiest to park, which matters more in Kigali than people expect
- Limits: modest luggage space, and out of its depth on Akagera bush tracks or wet steep clay
Toyota Land Cruiser Prado
- USD 75 per day, USD 450 per week
- 7 seats, automatic, 4WD, leather, air conditioning, GPS
- Genuine off road capability with a comfortable on road ride
- Meaningfully cheaper to fuel than the full Land Cruiser
- Limits: bigger to park than a RAV4, and not quite the load capacity of the Land Cruiser
Toyota Land Cruiser
- USD 110 per day, USD 650 per week
- 8 seats, automatic, 4WD with low range, leather, air conditioning, GPS
- The most capable and the most durable, the vehicle the regional safari industry runs on
- Space for eight people plus luggage plus camping kit
- Limits: the highest fuel bill by a distance, and wide on older Kigali streets
On price over a real trip
Take a ten day trip. At the weekly rate plus three extra days, the RAV4 lands around USD 415, the Prado around USD 675 and the Land Cruiser around USD 980. Then add fuel, where the same ordering repeats and the gap widens again over a full circuit.
That is the honest picture: choosing up a class costs you twice. It is often worth it, but it should be a decision rather than a default.
On capability
All three are four wheel drive. That is where the similarity stops.
The RAV4 is a light 4WD built for gravel, wet tarmac and moderate dirt. It will take you to Musanze, around Lake Kivu on the sealed roads and to the Akagera gate without complaint.
The Prado is a proper off road platform with the ground clearance and suspension travel for rutted volcanic access roads and the unpaved Congo Nile route.
The Land Cruiser adds low range gearing, load capacity and the kind of durability that means a failure in Nyagatare can be fixed by someone nearby. On Akagera's northern loops and in the heaviest rains it is in a different category.
On seats and luggage
Five seats in the RAV4 realistically means four people with luggage for a long trip. Seven in the Prado means five adults comfortably with bags, or seven on short transfers with light luggage. Eight in the Land Cruiser means eight, with a roof rack for the overflow. If you are camping with a rooftop tent, only the Prado and Land Cruiser are options.
Which one for which trip
- Two people, one week, Kigali plus a gorilla trek, dry season: RAV4. Anything more is money spent on capability you will not use.
- Family of four, ten days, mixed tarmac and lodge access roads: Prado. This is the single most common right answer.
- Any itinerary in March to May or October to November with unpaved sections: Prado minimum, Land Cruiser if the budget allows.
- Akagera game drives on the northern loops: Land Cruiser.
- Five or more people with full luggage: Land Cruiser.
- Camping with a rooftop tent: Land Cruiser or Prado.
- Cross border into Uganda towards Bwindi: Land Cruiser, because the Ugandan park access roads are the roughest of the trip.
What is identical across all three
Comprehensive insurance, unlimited mileage inside Rwanda, a full to full fuel policy, GPS navigation, a checked spare wheel with jack and brace, free delivery and collection in Kigali or at the airport, a free additional driver and 24 hour roadside support. The differences between these vehicles are capability and space, never the terms.
If you want a mid point, the Kia Sorento and Hyundai Tucson sit at USD 50 per day, USD 300 per week. The Sorento gives you seven seats at close to RAV4 money, though its off road ability is in the RAV4 class rather than the Prado's.

Frequently asked questions
Which is better in Rwanda, a RAV4 or a Prado?
The RAV4 for two people on tarmac in the dry season, on both price and ease of parking. The Prado for families, wet season travel, or any itinerary with real time on unpaved roads. The USD 30 daily difference buys space, clearance and comfort.
Is the Land Cruiser worth the extra cost?
For Akagera game drives, wet season travel, five or more passengers, rooftop tent camping or cross border trips into Uganda, yes. For a tarmac itinerary in the dry season it is capability you pay for twice, on the rate and on fuel.
What is the cheapest 4x4 SUV to rent in Rwanda?
The Toyota RAV4 at USD 45 per day, or USD 280 per week, with comprehensive insurance and unlimited mileage inside Rwanda included.
How many people fit in each SUV?
