Rwanda lets you meet two great apes on one trip. Mountain gorillas live in Volcanoes National Park in the north, and chimpanzees live in Nyungwe Forest in the south west. Combining the two makes a rich primate safari, and a rental car ties the route together neatly.

A sensible route
Most travellers start in Kigali, drive north to Musanze for the gorillas, then head south west to Nyungwe for the chimps, often with a night at Lake Kivu to break the journey. The reverse works too. Nyungwe is roughly five to six hours from Kigali, so plan an overnight rather than a same-day dash.
Permits for both
Gorilla permits are in high demand and should be booked well ahead. Chimpanzee permits are more affordable and easier to secure, but still book in advance during busy months. Carry your passport and permit confirmations to each briefing.
Best time for a combined safari
The drier seasons of June to September and December to February give firmer forest trails for both treks, though primates are tracked year round.
