Kigali International Airport (KGL) is small, modern and refreshingly quick to clear. Most travelers are through immigration and into a car within 45 minutes of the aircraft door opening. Here is exactly what happens, in order, so you can plan your first hours.

    Step 1: Immigration and visa

Rwanda offers visa on arrival to citizens of many countries, and also runs an online application through the national immigration portal, which is faster on the day. Citizens of the East African Community, and of a growing list of African and other nations, enter without a visa fee. Requirements are updated periodically, so verify your own nationality's position before you fly. Have your passport, return ticket and accommodation address ready. Queues at KGL are usually short.

    Step 2: Baggage and customs

Baggage reclaim is a single small hall and bags arrive quickly. Rwanda enforces a strict ban on single use plastic bags, and they are confiscated at the airport, so pack with fabric or paper bags instead. Drone imports require prior authorisation.

Step 3: Buy a local SIM card

There are mobile operator desks in the arrivals area selling tourist SIM cards with generous data bundles for a few dollars. Bring your passport, which is required for registration. Do this before you leave the terminal. Rwandan mobile data is cheap and coverage on main routes is good, which makes navigation, WhatsApp and mobile money straightforward. Download offline maps for the national parks where signal thins.

    Step 4: Money

There are ATMs and an exchange bureau at the airport. Change a modest amount into Rwandan francs for immediate expenses such as fuel, tolls and roadside purchases, and change the rest at better rates in the city centre. Cards work at hotels and larger businesses in Kigali but not in rural areas, so always carry some cash on a road trip.

Step 5: Collect your rental car

This is where booking ahead pays off. We meet arrivals 24 hours a day. Our representative waits in the arrivals area with your name, and the handover takes about 15 minutes:

    1. We check your driving licence, IDP if applicable, and passport.
    2. We complete and sign the rental agreement, and settle the balance.
    3. We walk around the vehicle together and photograph any existing marks, so there is no dispute later. Take your own photos too, it is good practice everywhere in the world.
    4. We show you the controls, the spare wheel and jack, the documents kept in the car, and the emergency number.
    5. You drive away.

Details are on our Kigali airport car rental page and in our 15 minute airport pickup guide.

Should you drive straight from the airport?

The airport is about 10 to 15 minutes from central Kigali on good roads, so the first drive is short and easy. That said, if you have landed at 2am after 20 hours in transit, or you are coming from a left hand traffic country, consider having us drive you to your hotel and hand the car over in the morning. It costs you nothing extra on the vehicle and it is the safer start.

What to know about that first drive into Kigali

    • Rwanda drives on the right. See our guide for visitors from left hand traffic countries.
    • The airport road into town is well surfaced and signposted.
    • Kigali is hilly with many roundabouts. Google Maps handles it well.
    • Seat belts are compulsory, phones must be hands free, and speed limits are camera enforced.
    • Fuel stations are attended. Tell the attendant the amount or ask for a full tank.

    Frequently asked questions

Usually 10 to 30 minutes. Applying for your visa online beforehand shortens it further.

Can I drop the car back at the airport when I leave?

Yes. We collect from the airport, your hotel or anywhere in Kigali. Tell us your departure flight time and we will agree a handover slot that leaves you comfortable margin.
