Kigali Airport Car Rental: From Arrivals Hall to First Drive

Nearly every international visitor to Rwanda lands at Kigali International Airport, and most of our customers collect their car right there. It is the simplest way to start a trip: no taxi, no hotel pickup, just a car waiting at arrivals. Here is how a Kigali airport car rental works in practice, step by step.

Kigali International Airport in 2026

Kigali International Airport, code KGL, sits in Kanombe, about ten kilometres east of the city centre. It is compact, clean and quick to clear compared with most hubs in the region. Carriers including RwandAir, Qatar Airways, KLM, Turkish Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines and Kenya Airways connect it with Europe, the Gulf and the rest of Africa.

You may have read about the new Bugesera International Airport south of Kigali. Its first phase has been pushed back to 2027 or 2028, so for any trip being planned now, KGL is still where you land and where your car will be waiting.

How the airport handover works

1. Send us your flight number. We track the flight, so a delay does not leave you stranded or cost you anything.
2. Clear immigration and customs. Visa on arrival is available for many nationalities, and many others enter visa free. Check the visa guide for your passport. Remember that plastic bags are confiscated.
3. Meet us in arrivals. A member of our team waits with your name on a sign.
4. Walk round the car together. We check the bodywork, tyres, spare, jack and fuel with you, and photograph anything worth noting.
5. Sign and go. Paperwork and the vehicle walk round usually take around fifteen minutes.

Airport delivery and collection are free, including for flights that land late at night or before dawn.

Your first drive from the airport

To central Kigali

Around 20 to 30 minutes to most hotels in Kiyovu, Kimihurura, Kacyiru or Nyarutarama, on good paved roads. Traffic is heaviest on weekday mornings and early evenings.

Straight to Musanze and Volcanoes National Park

Around two and a half hours, heading through the city and north west. This works well for a morning arrival. If you land in the afternoon, it is usually better to spend the first night in Kigali rather than drive the mountain road in the dark.

Straight to Akagera

About two and a half hours east. Again, only if you land early enough to arrive before dark.

Which car to book for an airport pickup

Pick the car for the whole trip, not the drive into town. A Toyota RAV4 at USD 45 per day suits paved routes in the dry season. A Kia Sorento at USD 50 fits families. A Land Cruiser Prado at USD 75 or a Land Cruiser at USD 110 is the right choice for Akagera's tracks, rainy months or crossing into Uganda. All are automatic.

Returning the car at the airport

Tell us your departure flight and we will meet you at the terminal. Allow ten minutes for the return check, and arrive at least two to three hours before an international departure. Return the car with a full tank, and leave time to refuel because the stations nearest the airport can be busy in the evening.

Frequently asked questions

Can I rent a car at Kigali airport on arrival without booking?

It is possible but risky, especially from June to September. Book ahead with your flight number so the car is waiting.

Is there an airport fee for car rental at Kigali International Airport?

Not with us. Airport delivery and collection are included in the rate.

What if my flight lands at night?

We meet night flights. Our advice is to drive to your Kigali hotel that night and leave for the parks the next morning.

Can I rent a car at Kigali airport and return it elsewhere?
