Rwanda Visa for US, UK and Canadian Citizens Explained
Rwanda dropped advance visa requirements for all nationalities. What that means at Kigali immigration, when the East Africa Tourist Visa is still worth buying, and what to carry.
Rwanda's entry rules are among the simplest in Africa, and they changed in a way that many travel articles have not caught up with. Here is where things stand for American, British, Canadian and European visitors, and what to actually do before you fly.
The main thing to know
Rwanda opened visa free entry to citizens of all countries. In practice this means you arrive at Kigali International Airport, present your passport, and are issued entry for a short stay without needing to have arranged a visa in advance and without paying a visa fee on arrival.
This is unusual and genuinely convenient. It also means the older advice you may find online, telling you to apply through the Irembo portal weeks ahead or to budget for a fee at the desk, is out of date for most visitors.
One caution: entry policy is set by the Rwanda Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration and can change. Check the official immigration website or your nearest Rwandan diplomatic mission close to your departure date, and do not rely on a blog post, including this one, as your final source.
How long you can stay
The standard visitor entry is issued for 30 days. If you need longer, extensions are handled in country through the immigration service. If you are coming for work, research, journalism or volunteering rather than tourism, different permits apply and those do need arranging in advance.
Is the East Africa Tourist Visa still worth buying?
Sometimes, yes. The East Africa Tourist Visa costs 100 US dollars and covers Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya on a single multiple entry visa valid for 90 days. Since Rwanda alone no longer requires a visa, the calculation is now purely about the other two countries.
It makes sense if your trip includes Uganda or Kenya, and especially if you plan to cross a land border and come back, for example driving from Kigali to Bwindi for gorilla trekking and returning to fly out of Kigali. It is not worth buying if you are staying in Rwanda only.

What you need in your hand at immigration
A passport valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date, with a blank page. Proof of onward or return travel, which is occasionally asked for. An address for your first night, so have your hotel booking accessible offline. And a yellow fever certificate only if you are arriving from a country with risk of transmission.
That last point catches people out in the wrong direction: travellers flying directly from New York, London, Toronto or Amsterdam do not need a yellow fever certificate for Rwanda. If you are routing through a country where yellow fever is present and you spend time outside the airport there, the requirement can apply. Check the specifics for your itinerary.
The arrival itself
Kigali International Airport is small, orderly and quick. Immigration is usually a matter of minutes, and there is a health desk, SIM card vendors and ATMs before you exit. Local currency is the Rwandan franc, and while US dollars are widely accepted for larger tourism payments, you want francs for fuel, small shops and tips.
Repack anything wrapped in single use plastic bags before you fly. They are banned in Rwanda and bags are checked on arrival. It is a brief and polite process but it does happen.

Bringing a driving licence
Your national driving licence from the US, Canada, the UK or an EU country is accepted for a visitor stay. Because those licences are printed in English or in a Latin alphabet, an International Driving Permit is not strictly required, though many visitors carry one because it is cheap and removes any ambiguity at a checkpoint or a land border. Do US citizens need a visa for Rwanda?
No advance visa is required. American citizens are admitted on arrival under Rwanda's open visa policy, normally for 30 days. Verify current rules with the Rwanda Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration before flying.
Do UK and Canadian citizens need a visa for Rwanda?
The same policy applies. British and Canadian passport holders are admitted on arrival without an advance visa.
How much does a Rwanda visa cost?
For a standard visitor entry, nothing. The only fee worth planning for is the 100 US dollar East Africa Tourist Visa, and only if your trip also includes Uganda or Kenya.
Can I extend my stay beyond 30 days?
Yes, extensions are applied for in country through the immigration service. Start the process before your initial entry period expires rather than after.
Do I need a yellow fever certificate for Rwanda?
Only if you are arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. Direct arrivals from North America and Europe are not affected. Transit routings can change the answer, so check your specific itinerary.
