Kigali Airport Self Drive Car Rental: Your First 24 Hours
A practical plan for the first day of a self drive trip from Kigali airport: where to sleep nearby, SIM and money, jet lag and night driving, the first supermarket run and how to be ready for an early gorilla trek.
The first 24 hours of a self drive trip set the tone for everything after it. Get them right and you arrive in Musanze or Akagera rested, with a local SIM, cash and a car you already understand. Get them wrong and you are driving an unfamiliar road in the dark after a night flight. This is the plan we give customers who collect a self drive car at Kigali airport.
Hour 0: landing and collecting the car
Our team meets you in arrivals with a name sign, walks round the vehicle with you and completes the paperwork in around fifteen minutes. Use this time well. Ask how the four wheel drive engages, where the spare and jack are, and to set the GPS to your first night's address. If you have not driven on the right before, say so and we will talk through the first few junctions.
Hour 1: SIM card and money
Buy a local SIM in the arrivals area before you leave. Data is inexpensive and coverage is good across most of the country. Withdraw some Rwandan francs from an ATM at the airport or in town, because fuel stations outside Kigali, parking attendants and small restaurants often prefer cash. Cards work at most hotels and larger businesses in the city.
Where to sleep near Kigali airport
The airport is only about ten kilometres from the centre, so you have two good options:
- Near the airport, in Kanombe or Remera. Minutes from the terminal, ideal after a late arrival or before an early departure, with easy access to the road east to Akagera.
- Central Kigali, in Kiyovu, Kimihurura or Kacyiru. Around 20 to 30 minutes away, with the best restaurants and the Kigali Genocide Memorial close by.
If your first stop is Akagera, staying near the airport cuts your morning drive. If it is Musanze, staying central or on the northern side of the city helps.
The night driving rule
If you land after about 4pm, do not drive to the parks that day. The sun sets around 6pm all year, rural roads are unlit, and pedestrians, cyclists and livestock use them after dark. Combined with a long flight, this is the single biggest avoidable risk of a Rwanda trip. Drive the short, well lit route to your Kigali hotel and leave at first light.
Hour 12: the morning supply run
Before you leave Kigali, stop at a supermarket for water, snacks and anything you want for the park days, and fill the tank. Akagera has limited supplies inside the park, and the road through Nyungwe Forest has long stretches with no fuel.
Hour 24: ready for the parks
If you are trekking gorillas, the briefing at the Kinigi park headquarters starts at 7am, so you need to be in Musanze the day before. A realistic plan is to land, sleep in Kigali, drive to Musanze the next morning, and trek the day after. That buffer also protects you from a delayed flight, which would otherwise risk a USD 1,500 permit.
