Nyungwe is one of the oldest rainforests in Africa, a mountain forest of mist, tree ferns and thirteen primate species, including chimpanzees. It is also the longest drive in a typical Rwanda itinerary. With a car, that drive becomes a highlight in itself rather than a transfer. Here is how to do it.
The route from Kigali
Kigali to Nyungwe takes about five to six hours on paved roads. The route runs south to Nyanza and Huye, then west through Nyamagabe, where the road climbs into tea country before entering the forest. The main road crosses the park itself, so you are driving through rainforest for the final stretch.
Break the journey. Either leave early and stop for lunch in Huye, or split it over two days with a night in Huye.
Stops worth making on the way
- Nyanza: the King's Palace Museum and its long horned Inyambo cattle, about two hours from Kigali.
- Huye: the Ethnographic Museum, widely considered the best in Rwanda.
- The tea estates: on the approach to the forest, the hills are covered in bright green tea. Stop at a safe pull in for photographs.

What to do in Nyungwe
Chimpanzee trekking
Treks start very early, often before dawn, because the chimps move fast once they leave their nests. Ask about the meeting point when you book, as it can be a drive from your lodge.
The canopy walk
A suspension walkway strung high above the forest canopy at Uwinka. Go in the late morning, once the mist has lifted, for views across the forest.
Waterfall and forest trails
Well maintained trails lead through the forest, including a popular walk to a waterfall. Colobus and other monkeys are common along the way.
Birding
Nyungwe is one of the best birding sites in East Africa, with many species found only in the Albertine Rift.
A two night Nyungwe plan
Day 1: arrive
Leave Kigali by 7am, stop at the King's Palace Museum in Nyanza, lunch in Huye and reach the forest by mid afternoon. Take a short forest walk before dark.
Day 2: chimps and the canopy
Chimp trekking before dawn, back for a late breakfast, then the canopy walk at Uwinka once the mist lifts. In the afternoon, visit the tea estates or walk a waterfall trail.
Day 3: onward
Either drive back to Kigali through Huye, or head west to Rusizi and north along Lake Kivu. From November to May, these two nights also qualify for the gorilla permit discount if you trek later in the trip.
Where to stay
Options range from simple guesthouses near the forest edge to a luxury lodge in the tea estates at Gisakura. With a car, you can also stay in Huye or on the Lake Kivu shore near Rusizi and drive in.
Which car for Nyungwe
The main road is paved all the way, so a Toyota RAV4 at USD 45 per day handles it well. Choose a Land Cruiser Prado at USD 75 if you are continuing along the Lake Kivu shore road, staying at a lodge with an unpaved access road, or travelling in the rains.
Driving the forest road
- Expect mist and rain at any time of year. Drive slowly and use headlights.
- Baboons and other monkeys sit on the road. Do not feed them or open windows near them.
- Fuel stations are scarce inside the forest. Fill up in Huye or Rusizi.
- Plan to finish driving before dark, which comes early under the trees.
