Kigali is the natural base for any Rwandan trip. It has the international airport, the widest vehicle choice in the country, and it is within a few hours' drive of everywhere worth going. Here is what renting a car here actually looks like.

    Where you collect the car

You do not need to travel to a rental office. We deliver, which is standard practice in Kigali.

    • Kigali International Airport. We meet your flight in arrivals, 24 hours a day. Send your flight number and we track delays. See our airport car rental page.
    • Your hotel or guesthouse. Anywhere in Kigali, at a time you choose.
    • A city centre address, an office, or a conference venue.
    • Elsewhere in Rwanda, by arrangement, including Musanze and Rubavu.

Drop off works the same way in reverse, so you can start at the airport and finish at your hotel, or the other way round.

    How long the handover takes

About 15 minutes. The sequence is:

    1. Document check: licence, IDP if applicable, passport.
    2. Sign the agreement and settle the balance.
    3. Joint walk around, photographing any existing marks. Take your own photos too.
    4. Vehicle briefing: controls, four wheel drive engagement, spare wheel, jack, documents location.
    5. Save our emergency number, and drive.

    What you pay

Rates are daily and scale with the vehicle: compact SUV, then mid size 4x4, then full size and safari Land Cruiser. Every rate includes comprehensive insurance and unlimited mileage within Rwanda, so there is no counter upsell. A driver, child seats, a rooftop tent setup or cross border permission are the optional additions. See current costs and what is included.

You pay a deposit to reserve and the balance on collection, in Rwandan francs, US dollars or by card. Read booking from abroad.

    Driving in Kigali specifically

Kigali is a comfortable city to drive in by regional standards. Roads are paved and well maintained, traffic is orderly, and drivers generally obey lane discipline. The specifics:

    • Motos are everywhere. Motorcycle taxis weave and stop suddenly. This is the main thing to watch.
    • The city is built on hills, so expect steep gradients and many roundabouts.
    • Parking in the centre is managed by attendants who take a small fee. Malls have secure parking.
    • Speed limits are camera enforced, generally 40 to 60 km/h in the city.
    • Rush hour is real, roughly 7 to 9am and 5 to 7pm, especially on the main arteries.
    • Umuganda, the community work morning on the last Saturday of each month, restricts movement until around midday. Plan around it.

Where you can go from Kigali

    • Volcanoes National Park and gorilla trekking via Musanze, two to three hours.
    • Akagera National Park, about two and a half hours east.
    • Lake Kivu at Rubavu, around three and a half hours.
    • Nyungwe Forest, around five to six hours southwest.
    • Nyanza and Huye for the King's Palace and museums, around two hours.
