If you only have a long weekend, three days is enough for a gorilla safari from Kigali. This self-drive itinerary keeps things simple with a hired 4x4.
Day 1: Kigali to Musanze
Collect your 4x4 at the airport and drive about 2.5 to 3 hours north to Musanze, the base for Volcanoes National Park. Settle in and prepare for an early start.
Day 2: Gorilla trekking
Start early at Kinigi for your gorilla trek. A 4x4 handles the tracks to the trailhead, see car rental to Volcanoes National Park. Spend the afternoon relaxing or visiting the twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo.
Day 3: Return to Kigali
Drive back to Kigali with time for lunch and souvenirs before dropping off the car.
