Self drive safari or with a guide?
Akagera permits self driving, and many visitors do it successfully. The honest trade off:
- Self drive is cheaper, entirely flexible on timing, and satisfying. You will find plenty of game on the main loops, though you will miss things a trained eye would catch.
- With a guide costs a daily fee and dramatically improves what you see. Guides know where the lions were yesterday, read tracks, and handle the radio network between vehicles. For a single day in Akagera, a guide often pays for itself in sightings.
A middle path many travelers take is self drive for the trip generally, plus a park guide hired at the Akagera gate for the game drive days.
Practical notes for Akagera
- Park entry fees and vehicle fees are paid separately from your rental.
- Fill the tank before entering. There is no fuel station inside the park.
- Carry water, snacks and a paper backup of the park map. Mobile signal is patchy.
- Stay in the vehicle except at designated points. This is a Big Five park.
- Early morning and late afternoon are the productive game viewing hours.
- Check tyres and spare before you go in. A puncture deep in the park is a slow problem.
