If we had to recommend one vehicle to a first time visitor doing a typical Rwanda itinerary, it would be the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado. It sits precisely between the compact RAV4 and the full size Land Cruiser, and for most trips that is exactly where you want to be.
What the Prado gets right
- Real off road ability. Low range four wheel drive, solid clearance and proper underbody protection. The park access tracks hold no fear for it.
- Long distance comfort. Rwanda's roads bend endlessly through hills. The Prado's suspension and seats make a four hour drive pleasant rather than tiring.
- Space without bulk. Five adults and luggage fit comfortably, and some versions seat seven, yet it is still manageable in Kigali traffic.
- Automatic availability. Most Prados in the rental fleet are automatic, which matters if you are also adjusting to driving on the right.
- Fuel sense. Noticeably more economical than a V8 Land Cruiser on a long circuit.
