The Toyota RAV4 is the car most of our self drive customers end up in, and it is the one people ask about most. It is cheap to rent, easy to drive and more capable than it looks. It is also not the right car for every Rwanda trip. This is the honest review we give over WhatsApp.

Where the RAV4 is excellent
Kigali
Compact enough for the market streets around Kimironko and easy to park, but high enough for speed bumps and the unpaved lanes between neighbourhoods. The automatic gearbox makes the city's steep hills painless.
The paved highways
Kigali to Musanze, Musanze to Rubavu, Kigali to Huye and on through Nyungwe are all paved. On these roads, the RAV4 is quiet, comfortable and noticeably cheaper on fuel than the bigger 4x4s.
Dry season gravel
The four wheel drive and ground clearance handle dry gravel, the southern loops in Akagera and most trailhead tracks near Kinigi in the dry months.
Where the RAV4 struggles
Akagera's northern plains in the rain
The tracks in the north of the park become deep ruts and slick mud after rain. A RAV4 lacks the clearance and low range gearing for them. Take a Land Cruiser for serious Akagera game driving.
Very rough lodge roads
A few lodges sit down steep, rocky access roads. Check with your lodge, and with us, before assuming the RAV4 will get there comfortably in wet weather.
Five people with full luggage
Five adults fit, but not with five large suitcases for a two week trip. For five or more, the seven seat Kia Sorento at USD 50 is the better choice.

We recommend a Prado or Land Cruiser for cross border trips to Bwindi.
Living with the RAV4 on a Rwanda trip
Luggage
Two large suitcases and two cabin bags fit behind the rear seats with room to spare. Four adults with a large suitcase each is a squeeze but workable if you pack soft bags. Camera gear and day packs ride comfortably on the back seat.
Fuel
The RAV4 is the most economical car in the fleet. Over a typical ten day circuit of around 1,300 km, expect to spend noticeably less at the pump than in a Prado or Land Cruiser, which adds up on a long trip.
Comfort on the hills
Rwanda's roads climb and wind constantly. The RAV4 feels light and responsive on the bends between Kigali and Musanze and through Nyungwe, and it is far easier to place on narrow mountain roads than the full size Land Cruiser.
Ground clearance
Enough for speed bumps, dry gravel and most short unpaved stretches. On deep ruts, take it slowly and pick your line, or choose a different route.
