Which 4x4 do you actually need
If your itinerary is Kigali plus a couple of paved day trips in the dry season, do not overpay for the biggest vehicle. If it includes Akagera tracks, remote lodges, a rooftop tent or a wet month, take the Prado or the Land Cruiser.
- Toyota RAV4, USD 45 per day: light 4WD for tarmac plus occasional gravel, two people with normal luggage
- Kia Sorento, USD 50 per day: seven seats and a softer ride, good for families staying mostly on sealed roads
- Land Cruiser Prado, USD 75 per day: the default recommendation, comfortable on tarmac and genuinely capable off it
- Land Cruiser, USD 110 per day: low range four wheel drive, heavy load capacity, the choice for rough access roads and long rain season trips

Driving a 4x4 on Rwandan roads
- Engage four wheel drive before the slippery section, not after you are stuck in it
- On corrugated gravel, a steady moderate speed rides better than crawling or charging
- Big 4x4s are wide: Kigali market streets and older neighbourhoods are tight
- Take hill bends gently, a loaded Land Cruiser carries a high centre of gravity
- Avoid inter town driving after dark, unlit vehicles and pedestrians are the real hazard
Cross border 4x4 hire
Our 4x4s can cross into Uganda and Tanzania with advance notice. We prepare the vehicle authorisation letter, the COMESA yellow card or equivalent third party cover, and brief you on the border procedure at Gatuna, Kagitumba or Rusumo. Tell us the route at least a few days ahead so the paperwork is ready before you travel.

How much does 4x4 car rental cost in Rwanda?
From USD 45 per day for a Toyota RAV4, USD 50 for a Kia Sorento, USD 75 for a Land Cruiser Prado and USD 110 for a Land Cruiser. Weekly rates lower the daily cost, for example USD 450 for a Prado week.
Are all your rental cars really 4x4?
Yes, the self drive fleet is 4WD across the board. The difference between models is capability and comfort rather than whether four wheel drive is fitted at all.
Can I take a 4x4 from Rwanda into Uganda?
Yes, with advance notice so we can prepare the cross border authorisation letter and the additional third party insurance required on the Ugandan side. Call +250 788 504 614 at least a few days before you travel.
Do you rent 4x4s with a rooftop tent?
Yes. A rooftop tent and camping kit can be fitted to the Land Cruiser and Prado for overland and camping trips. Ask for it when you book, as tent equipped vehicles are limited.
