What "4x4" really means in the Rwandan rental market
The term is used loosely, and the difference matters when the road turns to mud.
- All wheel drive (AWD), as in a RAV4, sends power to all four wheels automatically. Good in rain on tarmac, adequate on light dirt, not designed for serious off road work.
- Part time four wheel drive with low range, as in a Prado or Land Cruiser, lets you lock into four wheel drive and select a low gear set for steep, slippery or rocky ground. This is what you want for park tracks.
When you enquire, ask which of the two you are being offered. A rental described as a 4x4 that turns out to be a front wheel drive crossover is a real risk on the wrong road.

How to inspect a 4x4 before accepting it
Spend ten minutes on this. It is the best insurance you have.
- Tyres. Check tread depth on all four and the spare. Worn tyres on wet volcanic tracks are the single biggest hazard.
- Spare, jack and brace. Confirm all three are present and that the spare holds air.
- Engage four wheel drive. Ask the handover representative to demonstrate it on that specific vehicle and try it yourself.
- Fluids and leaks. Glance under the vehicle for fresh drips.
- Lights, wipers, horn, air conditioning. All get used here.
- Photograph existing damage. Walk around with your phone and record every mark, with the representative present.
