When to Visit Rwanda and What It Means for Your Rental Car
Rwanda's two dry seasons and two rainy seasons change which vehicle you should book, how long drives take and what gorilla trekking feels like. A month by month driving guide.
Rwanda sits just south of the equator at altitude, which gives it a pleasant climate all year and no real winter or summer. What it does have is a clear wet and dry rhythm, and that rhythm should influence which vehicle you rent.
The four seasons, and what they mean on the road
Long dry season: June to September
The peak tourist window and the best driving conditions. Unpaved roads are firm, park tracks are straightforward, and gorilla trekking trails are at their least muddy. This is when a compact SUV becomes a realistic option even for a fairly ambitious itinerary, though a 4x4 is still better for Akagera and the Volcanoes trailheads.
The trade off is demand. Gorilla permits and good 4x4s book out weeks or months ahead, and rates are at their firmest. Book early.
Short rains: October to November
Afternoon downpours, usually short and heavy rather than all day. Roads stay passable but unpaved surfaces get slick, and the Lake Kivu road in particular becomes a genuine 4x4 proposition. The landscape is spectacularly green and there are far fewer visitors, so this is an underrated window if you have the right vehicle.
Short dry season: December to February
The second peak. Warm, largely dry, excellent driving. Popular with holiday travelers, so permits and vehicles need booking ahead again. Conditions are close to the June to September window.
Long rains: March to May
The wettest stretch, with rain that can persist for hours rather than minutes. Tarmac roads remain fine, but unpaved roads, park tracks and the volcanic access routes to the gorilla trailheads get seriously muddy. A low range 4x4 stops being a preference and becomes a requirement.
The compensations are real: the lowest prices of the year, the fewest tourists, dramatic landscapes and easier permit availability. Gorillas are found every day regardless of weather. If you are comfortable with mud and you book the right car, this can be an excellent time to come.

What changes on the road when it rains
- Drive times stretch. Add 30 to 50 percent on unpaved sections.
- Visibility drops sharply in a heavy downpour. Pull over rather than push on.
- Mud on tarmac washed down from banks makes bends slippery. Slow into curves.
- Roadside gullies fill fast. Do not pull onto a soft verge you cannot see.
- Never drive into moving water across a road.
- Steep unpaved compound driveways in Kigali become genuinely difficult without clearance.
Activity notes by season
- Gorilla trekking runs all year. Dry months mean firmer trails and shorter walks. Bring waterproofs and gaiters whatever the month.

Can you still see gorillas in the rainy season?
Yes. Trekking runs every day of the year and the gorillas are located daily. The trails are simply muddier.
Do I need a 4x4 in the dry season?
For tarmac routes, not necessarily. For Akagera and the Volcanoes trailheads, yes even in the dry.
Are rental rates cheaper in the rainy season?
