Car Rental in Rwanda for UK and European Travelers

Kigali is well connected to Europe, with direct and one stop routes through Brussels, London, Amsterdam, Paris, Frankfurt, Istanbul and Doha. For European visitors, hiring a car in Rwanda is the difference between seeing Kigali and seeing the country. Will my European driving licence work in Rwanda?
Yes. A valid national driving licence from a UK or EU country is accepted for visitors. If your licence is not printed in English or French, carry an International Driving Permit alongside it. UK photocard licence holders are fine as is, though an IDP obtained from the Post Office costs very little and is worth having if you plan to cross into Uganda or Tanzania. Always carry your passport with the licence.
Important: Rwanda drives on the right
This matters most for British and Irish visitors. Rwanda drives on the right hand side of the road using left hand drive vehicles, the same as France, Germany or Spain. If you are used to driving on the left, give yourself a gentle first hour. The practical adjustments are:
- The gear lever is on your right, the door is on your left. Your instinct will be reversed.
- Roundabouts run anticlockwise. You give way to traffic already on the roundabout, coming from your left.
- When pulling out after a stop, consciously check that you are settling into the right hand lane.
- Overtaking happens on the left of the vehicle ahead.

Rwandan roads compared with European roads
The paved network between Kigali, Musanze, Rubavu, Huye and Nyagatare is in good condition and generally better surfaced than travelers expect. What differs is the terrain. Rwanda is called the land of a thousand hills for a reason, so average speeds are lower than the distance suggests. Budget three hours for Kigali to Musanze and back with stops, and around three and a half hours for Kigali to Rubavu on Lake Kivu. Roads inside the national parks and on rural feeder routes are unpaved, which is where a 4x4 earns its keep.
What car hire in Rwanda costs a European visitor

Which vehicle for a European itinerary?
Most European visitors combine gorilla trekking with Lake Kivu, and often add Nyungwe or Akagera.
- Volcanoes National Park: book a 4x4. The access tracks to the trailheads are rough and frequently muddy.
- Lake Kivu and Kigali only: a RAV4 is ample and cheaper to fuel.
- Full country circuit or Akagera game drives: a Prado or Land Cruiser, ideally with a pop up safari roof.

Practical arrival notes
Many European flights land in Kigali in the evening or overnight. We meet arrivals 24 hours a day at Kigali International Airport, so a late landing is not a problem. Buy a local SIM in the arrivals hall for cheap data, and note that Rwanda is on Central Africa Time, which is UTC+2. That means there is no time difference from Central European Summer Time and only one or two hours from the UK, so jet lag is minimal and you can realistically drive on arrival day.

Do I need an International Driving Permit for Rwanda?
Not if your licence is in English or French. If it is in another language, carry an IDP with it. An IDP is recommended for everyone planning a cross border trip.
