Flights to Kigali from the US, UK and Canada

Getting to Rwanda is easier than most people assume, but the routing matters more than the fare. A badly chosen connection can cost you a full day at the front of a short trip. Here is how travellers from the United States, Canada and the UK actually reach Kigali, and what to think about before you book.

The basic situation

Kigali International Airport is served by a good spread of international carriers, but there are no direct flights from anywhere in North America. Everyone from the US and Canada connects at least once, usually in Europe, the Gulf or an African hub. From the UK, there is a direct option.

From the UK

RwandAir operates a direct service between London Heathrow and Kigali, which is the fastest and simplest way in from Britain. It is not always the cheapest, so it is worth comparing against one stop alternatives.

Those alternatives are plentiful. Qatar Airways connects through Doha, Turkish Airlines through Istanbul, Brussels Airlines through Brussels, KLM through Amsterdam, Ethiopian Airlines through Addis Ababa and Kenya Airways through Nairobi. Brussels and Amsterdam are the shortest detours geographically and often the most civilised connections. Doha and Istanbul frequently win on price and offer the newest cabins.

From the United States

From the east coast, the common patterns are through Brussels, Amsterdam, Doha, Istanbul or Addis Ababa. A single connection is achievable from New York, Washington, Boston and increasingly from other hubs, with total journey times commonly in the 18 to 24 hour range door to door.

From the west coast, you are looking at two connections in most cases, or one very long one through the Gulf. Journey times of 26 to 32 hours are normal. Build a recovery day into the front of your itinerary if you are flying from Los Angeles, San Francisco or Seattle, particularly if a gorilla trek with a 7am briefing is waiting for you.

From Canada

There are no direct services from Canada. Toronto and Montreal travellers usually route through Brussels, Amsterdam, Doha, Istanbul or Addis Ababa, sometimes with a domestic or transborder hop first. Vancouver almost always means two connections. Ethiopian's Toronto service via Addis is worth checking, as it can be the shortest overall option from eastern Canada.

Choosing a connection well

Three things matter more than the fare. First, connection length: anything under about 90 minutes at a large hub is optimistic with checked bags, and anything over about six hours turns into a wasted half day. Second, arrival time in Kigali: many of these routings land late in the evening or in the small hours. Third, baggage policy, because gorilla trekking gear is bulky and low fares from some carriers do not include a checked bag.

Late night arrivals, which are the norm

A large share of flights into Kigali land between 8pm and 3am. This is worth planning for rather than discovering. Immigration is quick and the airport is calm even at those hours, but you do not want to be negotiating transport at 1am after 24 hours of travel, and you should not be driving to Musanze that night.

The straightforward answer is to arrange a pickup in advance and book your first night in Kigali rather than at the park. Drive north the following morning, rested and in daylight. What happens at the airport

Kigali International is small and easy. You clear immigration without an advance visa under Rwanda's open entry policy, collect bags, and pass a check for single use plastic bags, which are banned. SIM cards, ATMs and currency exchange are all available in the arrivals area. Getting a local SIM immediately is the single most useful thing you can do, since navigation and WhatsApp will carry you through the trip.

Flying home
