Self drive in Rwanda has gone from an unusual choice to one of the most popular ways to see the country. The reasons are simple: good roads, short distances, low crime and parks that allow private vehicles. What trips people up is the order in which they plan things. This guide puts the decisions in the order that actually works.
Step 1: choose your season
Rwanda has two dry seasons, June to September and mid December to February, and two wetter ones, March to May and October to November. The dry months are best for driving and for Akagera, but they are also the busiest and the gorilla permit costs the full USD 1,500.

Step 2: secure permits before anything else
Gorilla permits are limited and sell out months ahead in the high season. Book them first, three to six months in advance, and fix the rest of the trip around the trekking date. Nothing else in Rwanda is as hard to change.
Step 3: draw the route
The classic self drive circuit covers five regions:
- Kigali, for the memorial, markets and restaurants.
- Akagera in the east, for savannah and the Big Five.
- Volcanoes National Park near Musanze, for gorillas and golden monkeys.
- Lake Kivu in the west, for beaches, boat trips and rest days.
- Nyungwe in the south west, for chimpanzees and the canopy walk.

Step 5: book accommodation along the route
With a car, you are not tied to the lodges tours use. Guesthouses in Musanze town, Rubavu and Huye cost a fraction of park edge lodges and are a short drive from the action. Book the Akagera and Nyungwe nights early if you want the permit discount, since those are the nights that qualify.
Step 6: sort documents at home
- Driving licence held for one to two years, plus an International Driving Permit if it is not in English or French.
- Passport with at least six months of validity.
- Visa or visa on arrival, depending on your nationality.
- Travel insurance that covers you, separate from the car's insurance.
Five mistakes first time self drivers make
- Driving after dark. Plan every day to finish by 6pm.
- Arriving in Musanze on trek day. Sleep there the night before the 7am briefing.
- Underestimating Nyungwe. It is five to six hours from Kigali, not a day trip.
- Taking a small car into Akagera's north in the rain. That is Land Cruiser country.
- Not filling up before the parks. Fuel stations inside and near the parks are scarce.
