Rwanda is an unusually easy African country to visit with children. It is safe, compact, malaria risk is lower than much of the region, and the driving distances are short enough that nobody melts down in the back seat. The vehicle you choose makes a real difference to how the week feels.
Choosing the vehicle
Two adults, one or two children
A Toyota RAV4 or similar compact SUV is comfortable and economical if you are on tarmac. Move up to a Prado if you are going to the gorilla trailheads or travelling in the rains.
Two adults, three or more children
A Prado or Sorento. Five seats with real luggage space, or a seven seat version if you need the extra row. Remember that with all seven seats occupied, luggage space almost disappears, so tell us your bag count.
Extended family or two families

Child seats
We supply child and booster seats on request at no drama, but you must ask when you book rather than on the day, since stock is limited. Tell us each child's age and weight so we fit the right type. Managing Rwandan roads with kids
- Motion sickness is the real issue. Rwandan roads bend constantly through the hills, and children who are fine on a motorway can struggle here. Pack remedies, sit older children in front where possible, keep a window cracked and stop more often than you think you need to.
- Distances are short but slow. Kigali to Musanze looks like nothing on a map and takes two to three hours. Plan around it.
- Stops are pleasant. There are viewpoints, tea plantations and small towns all along the main routes. Break the drive rather than pushing through.
- Bring your own snacks and water. Roadside options thin out outside towns.
- Avoid night driving. Unlit roads with pedestrians and livestock are not the place to be with a tired car full of children.
Family friendly stops on the classic route
- Kigali: the Kimironko market, Inema Arts Centre, and easy restaurants with gardens. The Genocide Memorial is profoundly important but is genuinely difficult for younger children, so plan that carefully.
- Musanze: the Musanze caves, the twin lakes at Burera and Ruhondo, and the golden monkey trek, which has a lower minimum age than gorilla trekking.
- Lake Kivu at Rubavu: the standout family stop. Safe freshwater swimming, no crocodiles or hippos, beaches and boat trips.

The gorilla trekking age limit
Gorilla trekking in Rwanda has a minimum age of 15, which surprises many families. Younger children cannot go. The usual solution is that parents trek on alternate days while the other stays with the children, or the family does the golden monkey trek together instead, which has no such restriction. Your rental car makes this easy since you are not tied to a group schedule.
