Car Rental Rwanda 2026: What International Visitors Need
The 2026 version of renting a car in Rwanda: current park and permit prices, the low season discount that rewards driving yourself, which vehicle fits which route, and how booking from abroad works.
Most people searching for car rental in Rwanda are not really shopping for a car. They are trying to work out how to see gorillas, a savannah full of giraffes and a rainforest in one trip without spending the whole budget on transfers. A rental car is how you connect those places on your own schedule. This guide covers what has changed for 2026 and what international visitors actually need to know before they book.
Why more visitors are renting a car in Rwanda
Rwanda is small, the main roads are paved and well signed, and the distances between the headline parks are measured in hours, not days. From Kigali it is roughly two to two and a half hours to Musanze for Volcanoes National Park, about two and a half hours to Akagera, three to three and a half hours to Rubavu on Lake Kivu, and five to six hours to Nyungwe Forest.
That geography makes a self drive trip unusually practical by African safari standards. You are not flying between camps or sitting in a minibus with strangers. You leave when you want, stop at the roadside fruit stalls and the viewpoints above the tea estates, and change the plan when the weather changes.
The 2026 numbers that shape your itinerary
Park fees are now the biggest line in most Rwanda budgets, bigger than the car. Here is what international visitors are paying this year:

The line worth reading twice is the second one. Between November and May, Rwanda takes 30 percent off a gorilla permit if you also spend two nights in Akagera or Nyungwe, or one night in each. That saves USD 450 per person. For a couple, the USD 900 saved covers about three weeks of a Toyota RAV4 at the weekly rate. And the easiest way to get to Akagera and Nyungwe is to drive yourself.
Which car to rent in Rwanda
The honest answer depends on your route and your month, not on how adventurous the trip feels.
- Toyota RAV4, USD 45 per day. Five seats, automatic, four wheel drive. Right for Kigali, Musanze, Lake Kivu and Nyungwe on the main roads, especially in the dry season.
- Kia Sorento or Hyundai Tucson, USD 50 per day. More room, seven seats in the Sorento. A good family car on paved routes.
- Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, USD 75 per day. The sweet spot for a full circuit with Akagera's tracks, lodge access roads and the rainy months.
- Toyota Land Cruiser, USD 110 per day. For serious Akagera game driving, heavy rain, bigger groups and cross border trips into Uganda.

What you need to rent a car in Rwanda
Documents
A valid driving licence held for at least one to two years, and your passport. If your licence is not printed in English or French, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. Get the IDP at home before you fly, because you cannot get one after landing. Our IDP guide covers the details by country.
Age
Drivers are normally expected to be 23 or older.
Payment
A deposit holds the car for your dates and the balance is settled at handover. Visitors booking from the US, UK and Europe typically pay the deposit by card or bank transfer. The booking from abroad guide walks through it.
Driving in Rwanda: the short version for 2026
- Rwanda drives on the right. If you come from the UK, Ireland, Australia, Kenya or Uganda, read our driving on the right guide first.
- Speed limits are typically 40 to 60 km/h in towns and 80 km/h on open roads, enforced by cameras and police checkpoints.
- On the last Saturday of most months, the Umuganda community work morning limits movement until around 11am. Plan a slow breakfast.
- Plastic bags are banned. They are taken off you at the airport, so pack with that in mind.
- Night driving outside towns is best avoided, not because of crime but because of pedestrians, cyclists and unlit roads.

A realistic first trip plan
For a first visit, seven to ten days by car covers the essentials without rushing:
- Collect the car at Kigali International Airport and spend a day in Kigali.
- Drive east to Akagera for two nights of self drive game viewing.
- Drive back west through Kigali to Musanze for gorilla trekking.
- Continue to Rubavu on Lake Kivu for a day of rest.
- Follow the lake south to Karongi, then climb to Nyungwe for two nights.
- Return to Kigali via Huye and Nyanza.
